Art historians and archaeologists often ask, “what is the effect?” of this artwork or space – “how do viewers respond to it physically or emotionally?” This line of inquiry is taken from the philosophical concept of “phenomenology” that considers the body, human subjectivity and individuals’ lived experience. For our purposes, it has been adapted as a methodology that applies the use of one’s sensory experiences to view and interpret an archaeological site or artwork.
Many of the sites we have discussed have gotten the phenomenological treatment from recent scholars not least of which is Teotihuacan. Considering the civic planning, the architectural style, and the public murals at the site, why would phenomenology be a good method to employ? In other words, what would it feel like to walk through the site or stare into one of their murals? Draw on emotional affect and even senses beyond sight!
