One of the preoccupations of the Victorians was the freedom that seemed to beckon during their times transitioning so quickly. As we know, however, the idea of freedom ran smack into the desire and need for safety, brought about through reliance on established, set rules and limitations.
Both Anonymous’ poem and Wilde’s poem discuss freedom and justice, how they are defined, what they mean, and what the implications are.
