Professor Johnson receives the letter on 2nd June and sends the reply letter on 3rd June. The letter states that ‘I am very interested in your proposal to publish a new contract textbook but I am only willing to do so if you agree to my terms and conditions, which are included in this letter. Professor Johnson’s letter is received by the editor of the academic Press, Miss Laura, on 5th June. She thinks that the commission asked by ProfessorJohnson is too high. She replies that we accept all the terms and conditions in your letter except for the term on the commission, which is too high. We can only offer 20% of the net profit of the sale. She sends her reply with a special delivery on 5th June. Professor Johnson received it on the same day and sends a reply on 7th June that he is happy to accept the 20% commission. Miss Laura receives this letter on 8th June. But on 6th June, Miss Laura sent a letter to ProfessorJohnson, informing him that Academic Press had decided to suspend publishing law textbooks for the next two years so she has to withdraw her offer and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience which she caused to Professor Johnson. Professor Johnson receives this letter on 8th June. After sending the letter to Miss Laura on 7th June, Professor Johnson makes a promise to his contract law students that he will give £1,000 to the student who achieves the highest mark in the contract law exam. To show his sincerity, he gives £1,000 in cash to Alice, the student representative of the contract law class, to hold until a winner is announced. After receiving a letter of withdrawal from Miss Lauran on 8th June, he tells his students that he has to withdraw his earlier promise and takes the £1,000 back from Alice.
