The intention of this assignment is to allow for feedback on your topic, working thesis and ideas for main points before moving on to develop your Research Essay assignment. Please submit your assignment and bring it with you to class (if in person). You will have a one on one meeting with faculty during our Week 7 class to discuss your proposal. Keys to Success: In order to complete this assignment, you should develop a response to each of the four sections listed below: Section 1: Introduction (5 marks) The Introduction should provide a brief summary of the issue you are researching for your essay. It should clearl identify the topic and address some context for your topic (historical, cultural, etc.). You should refer to specific sources to support your discussion in this section. Your response in this section should be between 150-200 words. Section 2: Opposing Side (5 marks) Briefly discuss the opposing side to your position highlighting some general supporting points for the opposing side of the issue. You are not required to fully expand on those points but should make reference to specific sources to support your discussion in this section. Your response in this section should be between 100-150 words. Section 3: Working Thesis (2 marks) Write down a tentative working simple thesis statement for your essay. The thesis should reflect the topic and your position on the topic. See pg. 154-155 in The Empowered Writer text for details on Simple vs. Expanded Thesis Statements. Reminder: You should be developing a persuasive argument for this assignment – convince the reader to believe your position over an opposing side. You should have already identified a research question from the list provided on Blackboard. If you decide to do something not on that list, you should have been in touch with me for approval. Section 4: Main Point Themes (3 marks) Write down three main themes that will be the basis for your main body sections in your essay. You should also provide a brief rationale behind these ideas to show how they are relevant to the issue and your position. APA & Writing Mechanics (5 marks) Please include APA references/reference list and in text citations for your assignment. Your assignment should be formatting according to APA guidelines. Please ensure you edit your assignment to ensure ideas are clear and well developed.
