Clean hands save lives
(A) “Clean hands save lives”
For this problem, I’d like you to review the Center for Disease Control (CDC) website that provides promotional materials for the “Handwashing: Clean Hands Save Lives” campaign. While this seems quite topical given the current pandemic, this campaign has been going for several years now. The URL for the page with promotional materials follows:
https://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/materials.html
Using your knowledge of audience, rhetorical appeals, document design, and information structure, discuss in around 3hundred-4 hundred words how the CDC packages materials on this site. I’d like you to first give a line or two on their general approach, then use the following talking points to organize your response:
Give an example of a particular audience they are trying to reach (think carefully about purpose, and avoid responses like “anyone” or “general public”);
Discuss how they communicate with that audience using rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, logos);
Discuss the document design features they employ to reach that audience;
Tell me why you think they structure and package versions/variations of documents the way they do (including “re-mediation” of content into different media types), and how you think this packaging/reuse affects the reach and rhetorical impact of their message.
Remember that I’m looking for some discussion of all of the above points in your response. That’s how I’ll evaluate your submission.
(B) Reuse revision
Below you’ll find some less-than-ideal examples of content reuse. For each instance, use the terms from Rockley (2003) to identify the probable type of reuse (opportunistic / systemic) and the probable user option for reuse (locked / derivative / nested). Then, in one or two sentences, critique their reuse of content and suggest an improvement.
