Rizer . When Students my mother didn’t: She had me at nineteen and gave in to pressure to quit college and go to work Inspired to earn better grades and get involved on the campus, I sacri- a feed the necessary free time to stay ahead with my studies. I wasn’t the only one taking on that challenge: One day, I saw a fellow parent in the parking lot, struggling to get her baby out of her car. She was rushing to a group project, and having been a parent in college for nearly a year by that time, I knew she could do without the distraction of toting and keeping an eye on her new son. I had met her only once, through a classmate, but in a moment of bonding, I offered to babysit for her. She hesitantly, but gratefully, ac- cepted. At first, I was surprised that she allowed me to watch her new baby-after all, we didn’t really know each other. But we were both moms and students who could not turn down a helping hand. Nearly two years later, after transferring schools when my husband s was accepted into law school, I met another student when my son and her two daughters were wreaking’ playful havoc’ in the college bookstore. Lugging my books and chasing three pairs of little feet, I found her hunched over, looking for her own textbooks. I asked her, "Are you a student here?"-and within minutes our kids had a play date. Soon we met many families like ours, and I finally felt as though we had a community. We held organized playgroups, and several of us joined the same YMCA to work out together and swim with the kids. It was a perfect blend of college and fam- ily life. The years I worked toward my graduate degree while my husband o SUMMA worked through law school were the bandest hut the best. All of the student student families latched onto one another for support and friendship because we other? understood what it was like to need financial aid in cover the cost of diapers. We could commiserate about coordinating schedules to accommodate both swimming lessons for the kids and study sessions for ourselves. We gave one another scholuship information and scoops on the most family-friendly professors. We offered each other a place to laugh or cry about our hectic lives. Still, I often felt like an ouraider on the campus. Instead of a dorm, I 7 needed my own apartment. Grocery shopping and cooking took the place of cating and socializing at the cafeteria. I pared down my extracurricular involvement to the basics, doing enough to stay plugged into the student body and to give me things in put on my resume-like writing articles for the campus newspaper, participating in writing competitions, and attending conferences-but not so much that it interfered with my home life. I never found sufficient guidance among administrators in the financial- REFLECT aid and other offices. It wasn’t until my senior year, for instance, that I what res learned I could include day care as a living expense in my aid budget- and to you o it wasn’t anyone at the university who told me, but the information was part of a scholarship program. I was thrilled but wondered why no one had told me that before. Fortunately, I had been able to rotate family members to babysit up until that point, had I needed to rely on three years of day cure, 4. wreaks to bring about 5. havoci chaos, disorder 6. commiserate: to expiris sympathy with or understand the feelings of others
