THE PEKING ACROBATS bound onto the Main Stage on October 7, pushing the limits of human ability, flexibility, and control. The famed group, rooted in Chinese history and folk art, combines high-techspecial effects with awe-inspiring acrobatic feats. Baton tricks, tumbling, juggling, bowl and plate spinning and gymnastics cometogether into one jaw-dropping show.
The performance began with a small group dance as a way to show the audience all of the performers in their company. The group dance was a little uncoordinated and seemed as if it was something thrown together last minute. However, following the group dance was act 1, which completely changed my expectations for the rest of the show.
The first act began with one of the acrobatic performers slowly stacking chairs and climbing up each one. After about 10 chairs were stacked, almost to the ceiling, she went into a hand stand and performed an acrobatic stunt. While watching this performer, all I could think about was the amount of practice and patience she must have in order trust the position of the stacked chairs and counter balance her weight in order to not fall down. Following the acrobatic stair stunt was a contortionist. This act was gorgeous and entertaining, but coming from my dancer perspective, I expected more and wasn’t that impressed. The next two acts consisted of the chinese traditions that I was hoping to see, bowl spinning and plate spinning. These two acts were both very well done. The performers were well coordinated and made it look like it was done with ease.
There were moments in the show where I simply could not believe what I was seeing, and if someone told me I was dreaming I’d have been hard pressed to deny it. Especially the hula hoop act, which was the most mesmerizing of them all. The performer was wearing a beautiful costume and had matching hula hoops. She started with 3 or four and by the end of the performance she had about 14 hula hoops. She was juggling them, throwing them in the air, and of course hula hooping with them. They looked like bubbles she was moving so fast.
There was one act that consisted of a “magic ball”, this was definitely something you would buy off “Seen on TV”. I kinda zoned out during this act and it’s something I would recommend that they remove from the performance.
My focus came back when the next two acts came on, the type-rope, and the roller blading on the table. These two acts were absolutely crazy and mustve take a ton of practice and fails before they got it right. The audience was at the edge of their seats and everyones jaw was definitely wide open.
Walking into this performance, I was really excited to see traditional Chinese traditions and the show definitely met my expectations. The show included traditional Chinese lanterns, plate spinning, bowl spinning and the Chinese Dragon, also known as Loong. I was so happy and in aw to see these traditions included within the acts.
Notes
The bowl spinning act was too long
Within the hula hoop act the girl had a few slips but picked it up and moved on
The hula hoop act was cool and mezmerizing
The second contortion act featured weird smooth jazz music that kinda ruined it for me
The basketball juggler was really cool but soon after that was another juggling act and I needed more variety
I was really able to see the passion that the performers had for their craft while they were performing. Even though some of the acts were not as thrilling as I thought they would be, I really enjoyed myself and would recommend this show to anyone who is looking for a family friendly, fun performance.
