When it comes to addiction, the issue of family dynamics is complicated. Finding the balance between caring and enabling can be challenging for both sides. While some family members do their best to help a loved one overcome addiction, others may exacerbate the problem by enabling their the addict with money or other means. However, communication techniques are designed specifically for this purpose to establish boundaries and keep people out of harm’s way (Herzanek, 2015). To begin with, family members who are close to their loved ones must accept that their friend or family member is an addict. They can’t simply claim “I’m fine” and expect others to know drug use is just a phase. It is up to them to be clear on this point so that there isn’t any confusion as to the true nature of the situation. (Herzanek, 2015). Further, when a family member accuses the addict of lying or manipulating them, the family member should be patient and let them know that they will not tolerate this behavior. (What about Jon? After the initial shock has worn off, the addict must be assured of their best interest to gain their (Who ????) trust. This can be done through discussions regarding recovery and a customized plan designed especially for their individual needs. It is essential to avoid bootstrapping on their part as it can only lead to more issues down the line (Herzanek, 2015). In addition, it is essential to enlist the help of a family member or friend who can serve as a sounding board that can provide perspective and helpful advice. It is also necessary to seek professional treatment, but that should be done in coordination with their family members. It is not uncommon for addicts to fear facing their families about the addiction, so it can be best for the addict to know what they are going through before they do it. (What about Jon? Another way his (Mention John) family deals with the issue of substance abuse is to maintain a sober support group. This will help them through the stormy days of early
recovery and provide them with a level of comfort they can rely on whenever temptation finds them. Suppose a support group does not exist in the area (Sheff & Sheff, 2019). In that case, it may be a good idea for the (mention John) family members to start one themselves, especially if they have other friends or family members dealing with addiction. They can even take the initiative to form their support groups if they are unable or unwilling to meet at an existing one. Furthermore, if the family members are not acquainted with other people in recovery, they may want to reach out and do some research about local meetings and participate in one (Sheff & Sheff, 2019). Even if a meeting is complete, they should feel comfortable enough to know that there will be someone else who is willing to talk if they need a little more support.
Another way the family deal with addiction is to have false boundaries on the addiction. They should start by eliminating the behaviors that the addict usually engages in and keep them from using (Bush & Lipari, 2016). However, they must also ensure they are there to help the addict on their terms. Most of all, they should not let their emotions interfere with helping the addict.
Another way John’s family deals with the issue of substance abuse is to have coping skills available when suicidal thoughts surface. Most addicts suffer some depression, especially in the early stages of recovery.
The second part of this process (Which process????) involves setting boundaries, which can be done in several ways. Some families have been known to have the addict go through detox and rehabilitation at a facility before allowing them to return home. In other situations, the family may have to live elsewhere for some time to remove any temptation. This is especially helpful when an addict has children who are being cared for by others. Finally, another way of setting boundary to ensure that the addict does not have access to
drugs or money by keeping them away from places where they might obtain these things (Bush & Lipari, 2016). Moreover, the family should also ensure that the addict does not have any access to vehicles or other things that might be purchased with drug money.
Some families (It should be about John) choose to put their own house up as collateral for a drug rehab stay because they are worried that the addict will use their home to buy drugs. Again, this is especially useful if the addict has children and wants them to remain at home while they go through rehabilitation. Another way they deal with this issue is to have the addiction treated in lieu of bail (Bush & Lipari, 2016). This is a viable option when the family feels that the addict needs treatment before they are capable of living a healthy life. However, the person must be appropriately assessed to determine whether or not they suffer from substance abuse problems.
The final action for John and his family is to attempt family therapy. Family members and friends can attend this meeting to provide their input on how best to approach the recovery process. This allows for each person’s desires to be considered and accommodated. Conclusion?
