A culture taken from the umbilical stump grew Staphylococcus aureus and Group H strepto- coccus. After the first day, there was great improvement, and the infant continued to improve. She remained afebrile, has continued to eat very well, and she shows no sign of abdominal tenderness or peritonitis. The mother was instructed to watch the child closely and to notify the office if there is any redevelopment of the redness, swelling, or discharge. Recheck in two weeks for one-month check-up.
