There are approximately 3.6 million nurses in the United States. There is a projected unmet demand for nurses equaling almost 1 million nurses by the year 2025. Most of this demand comes from pending retirements and the exploding new roles for nurses. Roles for nurses include bedside nursing in hospitals, post-acute care facilities (i.e, rehabilitation, long-term care, home health, etc.),Nursing: A Stable Career Essay Paper school nurses, faculty at academic institutions, advanced practice nursing (e.g., certified registered nurse anesthetist, nurse practitioner), medical provider offices and nurse leadership. There are so many different opportunities in hospitals alone that include emergency, critical care, perioperative, med/surg and labor and delivery. Nursing is one of the most trusted, stable, and in-demand professions in which a person can make a real difference. Everyone will need a nurse at some point in their life.

In the Permian Basin, we have a Health Careers Consortium with leaders from each academic institution (e.g., Midland College, Odessa College, University of Texas of the Permian Basin, Texas Tech) and health care leaders from each hospital to promote health careers. We educate our community about the many opportunities in health care, not just nursing. At Midland Memorial Hospital we have a Youth Health Service Corps open to any high school student in Midland interested in a health care career. Many activities are planned to expose the students to as many health care careers as we can in the short time we have them. For nursing students, we have a strong nurse intern and nurse residency program to assist with transition to practice.
We strive to provide a nursing workforce reflective of the people we care for, including ethnic and racial minority groups. Of the 3.6 million nurses in the United States, approximately 10 percent of them are males. Every day, nurses make a positive difference in our patients’ lives by providing high-quality care and services.
