Currently, the Union has 27 EU countries as members. The United Kingdom (UK) was a member state of the European Union and of its predecessor the European Communities from 1 January 1973 until 31 January 2020 (European Union, 2020). The UK formally left the EU on 31 January 2020 and entered into an 11-month transition period.
