Way Too Early – A Motivation Case Study
(Allyson, 1998)
I was working with the wrestling team at the University of Banff. One day during practice, one of the young wrestlers
came up to me. “Excuse me,” he began, “Coach said I could take time out of practice to talk to you. Is there somewhere
we could go and talk privately?”
We walked upstairs to an empty conference room, talking generally about wrestling and the successful tradition of the
Banff program. Once in the room we closed the door and sat down. Extending my hand I said, “I’m Breht, but I don’t
believe I know your name.”
“I’m Julio, but the guys call me Scrappy. I just wanted to talk with you because I’ve been having trouble with the
morning workouts. You see, I don’t have any problem getting up at 5:45 A.M. like a lot of the other guys do. For me it’s
just that I don’t feel like being at wrestling at that hour of the morning. In fact, I’ve been beginning to think that I don’t
feel like being at wrestling practice any time lately.”
Julio pauses to look me squarely in the eye. It seemed like he had much more to say, so I asked him, “What more can
you tell me about this?”
“Well, I’m a redshirt freshman this year, so I don’t get to wrestle in any meets for the school until next fall. But I get to
practice against Bart, the number two guy in the nation, almost every day, and that should be exciting to me. He’ll
graduate after this year, and it’s between me and Sam to move into the starting spot at 177 pounds.
“You know, when you got us to discuss our roles and responsibilities as members of the team last week, it made all the
sense in the world that wrestling against the number two guy was some of the best practice I could possibly get. That in
itself was exciting to other guys on the team who wrestle against ranked guys. But I just don’t get excited about
wrestling the number two guy, or anybody else, these days. And none of the other excitement or fun the other guys
talked about in our meeting has worked for me either. I just come here and go through the motions.
“I didn’t used to be that way. When I was in high school, I would bug coach to come back at night and let me and a
couple other guys onto the mats so I would get an extra workout against them. And they weren’t racked or anything,
but I just wanted to wrestle more. That’s how I learned my single leg, double leg, and high crotch moves. Those moves
had a lot to do with me being a three-time state champion which in turn got me a scholarship here. Yet now that I’ve
been here six months or so, I almost couldn’t care less about a single leg or a high crotch takedown. I’ve seen that
feeling fizzle away to almost nothing.
“Take last Wednesday morning, for example. The coaches told us who we were going to wrestle the night before, and
they also said we’d be working on the high crotch, my best move. I can hit that move even against Bart, which tells me I
can likely do it against anyone in the country. But I came in that morning not feeling any particular excitement about
what we were about to do, and it showed in my performance. I didn’t hit one sold high crotch that Bart didn’t give me.
And I didn’t care! I realized, during practice, that I was way out of it and basically said ‘So what’ to myself. That’s not like
me, at least the me that wrestled well the last three years.
“So I’d like to know, form you, what you think I can do to be more excited about morning practice and practice in
general. It’s gotten to the point where I would just as soon not wrestle anymore than come in here and give a half-baked
effort.”
