Latin American Studies Paper
1. A recurring theme in our examination of film and political science writing has been that of the political polarization of society. Compare and contrast the political polarization of Latin American society past and present. Identify and explain differences across several countries and over time. Draw on the historical and political science readings, the video material, and the class discussions. Identify the contentious political issues in each country and time period, and examine the extent and nature of polarization.
There are many different ways to approach this topic. For example, you might explore the motives of the primary political actors, they way they are portrayed, or their behavior in each of the films, contrasting this and strengthening your argument with the readings and discussion.
Your key task is to explain differences across cases we have studied.
2. In what ways does the new left in Latin America resemble the old left? In
what ways do they differ? What explains the differences? To what extent is it safe to refer to a single style of old left and new left?
I suggest you choose one or more characteristics of regimes to compare- their policies, strategies, communications, political support, and chal- lenges. You might focus on just two countries or you might survey most of the region.
3.How have the political methods of popular leaders changed, and how have they remained unchanged since the end of the Cold War? Compare the political strategies and communication of major leaders, choosing at least two of (1) Salvador Allende, (2) Hugo Chavez or Evo Morales, and (3) Jair Bolsonaro or Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. Compare speeches, policy programs, organizational efforts, and offer an explanation for the change or lack thereof that you find.
4. Compare and contrast two of Latin America’s recent populist presidents:Jair Bolsonaro and Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. In what ways are they similar, how are they different, and what explains those differences? Consider personal style, political strategy and path, policies, and ways that they appeal to their bases. Are these types of Presidents a threat to democracy?
