Week 5 Discussion – Threaded Discussion 10: Associative Statistics
You will be assigned a type of question (Nominal, Ordinal or Interval, see below)
Nominal-
Ordinal-
Interval- this is my question
1) Create an example question that will represent this measurement level that is appropriate for your particular location or for researchers to understand.
Example: Does Nationality relate to Color choice?
This question represents Nominal Data. Nominal data is a category, and both the terms “Nationality” and “Color” in this example is a nominal type of data.
2) Based on your 2 Variable Measurement Level (Nominal, Ordinal, Interval) determine an appropriate statistical choice or test that could be used to understand the results of this question.
3) Explain a reason why these two variables chosen may be important for a researcher in your field to understand.

1. Interval Scales
Data in Interval measurements have order, and have meaningful and equal measurements between one another. Interval data is similar to ratio, but it can go into negative numbers. Interval scales measure distance between two constant, computable, and familiar units. Nominal and Ordinal scales connect qualitative data to variables, whereas Interval scales allow researchers to find the difference between variables.
Example:
Does ones job satisfaction relate to their credit score?
How much do you enjoy your job?
1 – Not Very Much
2
3
4
5
6
7
8
9
10 – Very Much
What is your credit score?
Ones credit score is measurable interval data, where researchers can place variables into chronicle order + find the difference between variables to provide further data.
The difference between a credit score of 700 and 750 is 50 points, as is the difference between a credit score of 800 and 750 is 50 points as well.
Explanation:
Researchers can measure results from participants to understand the relationship between ones enjoyment of their job and their credit score (if any). Credit scores are grouped into 4 categories, which are: Very Poor (300-579), Fair (580-669), Good (670-739), Exceptional (740-749), Very Exceptional (800-850) (Experian.com). Both job satisfaction and credit score are both measurable. The better ones credit score, the easier they will be able to navigate through life using credit or their reputation (DeMatteo, 2020). Both variables play an important role for researchers to understand a possible force that builds or destroys an individual’s credit score. Research can be published afterwards to explain links from their findings.

Create an example question that will represent this measurement level that is appropriate for your particular location or for researchers to understand.
Interval: Interval scales are scales that have nominal and ordinal properties (Zikmund, et. al., 2012). It is the level of measurement where attributes composing variables are measured on specific numerical scores (values) and they have equal distances between attributes. Time and temperature are examples of interval scales (Salkind, 2010).
Example Question:
The following question will be surrounding the topic of COVID-19
How satisfied are you with the use of masks in your community during the COVID-19 pandemic?
Very Unsatisfied
Somewhat Unsatisfied
Neutral
Somewhat Satisfied
Very Satisfied
Based on your 2 Variable Measurement Level (Nominal, Ordinal, Interval) determine an appropriate statistical choice or test that could be used to understand the results of this question.
The appropriate statistical test that could be used to understand the results of this question are common arithmetic operations. A 5-point rating scale will be used to describe the satisfaction level of the participants answering on the use of masks in their area. It can then be added with amount of responses for each answer choice. For example, W=weight of answer choice and X=response count for answer choice. X1+W1+X2+W2+X3+W3=Total. As you can see, simple math is used to solve this question.
Explain a reason why these two variables chosen may be important for a researcher in your field to understand.
In this example, the researchers are looking for the significance in comfortability and satisfaction that participants have and will then match the response count with the weight of that answer choice which is the answer choice of: Very Unsatisfied, Somewhat Unsatisfied, Neutral, Somewhat Satisfied and Very Satisfied. If a researcher does not elect a number on a 5-point scale to the answer choices before the research takes place, there can be no explanation for the level of satisfaction from the participants.
