For your second paper, you will build on the skills developed in Unit 1 to produce a complex analysis of the Green New Deal. Whereas your Unit 1 essay focused narrowly on explaining and assessing Bregmans case for UBI, your Unit 2 paper should synthesize a broader range of sources and perspectives to comment on the Green New Deal. Among the required sources:
1. The text of the Green New Deal legislation
2. Naomi Kleins On Fire
3. Any one or more of the sources compiled in our discussion page
Additionally, your essay should use the conceptual toolkit well develop in todays class as a lens through which to interpret and comment on the above sources.
The goal of your essay is to advance a thesis regarding the Green New Deal as a policy for attaining sustainability or environmental justice. In developing your thesis, you should consider the strengths and weaknesses of the Green New Deal as it currently exists, as well as the directions it can/should be developed in moving forward.

Your essay has made considerable progress since the first draft, which raised some worthwhile points regarding UBI but didn’t focus enough on assessing Bregman’s case for the policy. Right away, it’s easier to see how the new draft refocuses the discussion so that Bregman plays a larger role from the beginning, and that’s clearly an important improvement.
On the other hand, there are still a few key points that need further work:
– Most important is the thesis. Remember, a thesis is not just a general topic for the paper, its a specific argument within / about that topic. So beyond just ‘exploring’ UBI or ‘covering’ Bregman’s arguments, the thesis needs to tell us what you will ultimately argue – what position you will take.
– I also think there’s room for some broader consideration of Bregman’s book. Almost all of the evidence is drawn from just a few pages of the book, and it would have been nice to see you bring in more detail as you explain the way that Bregman’s argument is constructed.
Ultimately, the paper provides an effective overview of the topic, but you want to make sure that it takes a stance of its own and argues for that stance throughout – that’s the ultimate goal with this kind of assignment. Keep that in mind as you work on the next essay, and I think you can end up with a stronger final product.
