Persuasive Speech Outline
I. INTRODUCTION
A. Diane was a 58 year old martial art instructor who was previously married for 18 years upon reentering the dating scene. She soon met a man named Philippe who she fell for who was very charming. After months of dating Diane suspected Philippe was cheating on her and soon after caught him red handed. At her next doctors appointment she learned that she had contracted an STD, not only that but it was HIV. Diane then began following Philippe and learned that he was dating 9 other women who had also received HIV from him. When enough evidence was gathered the women filled police reports against him. He was then prosecuted for six counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and is currently serving 45 years in prison ( OPRAH WINFREY SHOW OCTOBER 20TH 2009).
B. Sadly, Diane and the 9 other women are not alone, it is possible that as many as 40 million people are living with HIV today.
C. Today I am 1st going to talk to you about the problems, 2nd the causes, and 3rd about the solutions to fixing the problems of HIV.
II. PROBLEM
A. We are 1st going to be looking at the sexually transmitted disease HIV itself, and then 2nd those who are infected with HIV/AIDS.
B. ( AMERICAN HERITAGE COLLEGE DICTIONARY) HIV is a retrovirus that causes AIDS.
1. AIDS is a severe immunological disorder which causes an increase susceptibility to opportunistic infections and certain rare cancers.
C. So we will now look at those infected with HIV/AIDS.
1. ( AVERT.ORG) Almost 40 million people are living with HIV who are infected globally; almost half of them are women.
2. In America it is estimated that somewhere around 500,000 people are currently living with AIDS alone, not accounting for those who only have HIV.
TRANSITION (So now that I told you about the problem, I am now going to tell you about the causes.)
III. CAUSES
A. We are now going to 1ST going to look at how HIV can be spread and 2nd the most common way those who are uninfected become infected by it.
B. ( CDC.GOV) HIV can be spread through the use of sharing needles and syringes with one who is already living with HIV.
1. Through transfusions of infected blood or clotting factors.
2. Babies born to HIV-infected women may become infected before or during birth or through breast-feeding after birth.
C. We are going to look at the most common way HIV is spread.
1. ( HIV ESSENTIALS, PAUL SAX) Unprotected sex is the leading cause of how people contract HIV.
2. Most people will assume that their partners are STD free and then come to learn that they have contracted the disease.
3. HIV can be spread through having vaginal, anal, or oral sexual intercourse.
TRANSITION (So now that I told you about the causes, I am now going to tell you about the solutions.)
IV. SOLUTIONS
A. We are 1st going to look at solutions on a personal level, then 2nd on a governmental level.
B. ( SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES, LOUISE GERDES) When one has a new partner and is going to have sexual intercourse you should both get tested for STDs first.
1. “Hooking up” with random people isn’t the best idea even when a condom is used because results are still inconclusive of whether they prevent the spreading of STDs and HIV.
C. The government should implement that every year or two people be tested for STDs and HIV to prevent them from spreading.
1. (ABSNEWS.COM) More money should then also be invested to Vaxgen who may have found a possible vaccine to prevent the infection of HIV. Though test results have shown positive results more data still needs to be collected.
V. CONCLUSION
A. So I have now 1st told you about the problem, 2nd the causes, and 3rd the solutions.
B. So Diane and the nine other women who contracted HIV from Philippe are not alone. HIV is a very serious and life threatening issue that must be taken very serious and should try and be prevented.
C. We can do something about this!…..Make sure you are more aware about the people you are having sexual intercourse with. Go get tested before fooling around with someone and make sure to tell this to all those who you know are sexually active.
D. "No one can lead our lives for us. We are responsible for our actions. So people—especially the younger generation—need to be very careful especially where safe sex is concerned." – Salman Ahmad

PERSUASIVE SPEECH (17 POINTS)
CLASS # 15461
PERSUASIVE SPEECH
STUDENTS MUST PREPARE AND DELIVER A 5 MINUTE PERSUASIVE SPEECH.
THE SPEECH SHOULD HAVE AN ATTENTION GETTING DEVICE AS WELL AS AN EFFECTIVE CONCLUSION.
THE SPEECH SHOULD BE DIVIDED INTO 5 MAIN POINTS
1) INTRODUCTION 2) PROBLEM 3) CAUSE 4) SOLUTION 5) CONCLUSION
THE SPEECH MUST HAVE A MINIMUM OF 5 SOURCES (NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES ONLY-NO INTERNET SOURCES) THE SOURCES SHOULD BE IN (BOLDFACE TYPE AND PARENTHESIS) IN THE OUTLINE WHERE YOU ARE ACTUALLY GOING TO SAY THEM OUT LOUD DURING YOUR SPEECH. (NO WORKS CITED OR BIBLIOGRAPHY NEEDED AT THE END OF THE OUTLINE).
If an article is published in the New York Times online, it is also published in the hard copy. Just site it like a regular published source (According to the New York Times January 10, 2021).
No one, including me, will know the difference if you cite the source properly.
What you don't want to do is say according to thenewyorktimes.com.
Honestly, I don't want students to site more than one website. So no more than one url source. If a published magazine is also online it's fine, just site it like a hard copy publication. The date listed with the article is the date it was published in hard copy.
I just don't want students siting 10 random website that, for all we know, could be giving completely false information. I could buy a domain name right now and say anything I want about anything. There's just no way to verify the legitimacy of random websites. The Harvard Medical Journal is also a hard cover publication that is also published online.
STUDENTS ARE NOT REQUIRED TO USE A VISUAL AIDE BUT VISUAL AIDES ARE ENCOURAGED.
EACH STUDENT MUST TURN IN A 2 PAGE TYPED SPEECH OUTLINE. STUDENTS SHOULD PROVIDE AS MUCH DETAIL IN THE OUTLINE AS POSSIBLE. STUDENTS MUST USE COMPLETE SENTENCES ETC. SOURCES MUST ALSO BE INCLUDED
IN PARENTHESIS INSIDE THE OUTLINE AS PREVIOUSLY STATED. PLEASE REVIEW THE EXAMPLE PERSUASIVE SPEECH OUTLINE:

FINDING A PERSUASIVE SPEECH TOPIC
Unlike the informative speech, where we were just giving information about your topic, the persuasive speech requires that you choose one side of an issue and PERSUADE the audience to agree with you.
GOOD PLACES TO LOOK FOR PERSUASIVE SPEECH TOPICS:
A SHOW CALL "FRONTLINE" ON PBS
FRONTLINE
(Links to an external site.)
GO TO THE "TOPICS" BUTTON AND CLICK ON IT.
THE FOLLOWING TOPIC AREAS (LISTED ON FRONTLINE) OFTEN HAVE AMAZING TOPICS
"CRIMINAL JUSTICE"
"EDUCATION"
"HEALTH"
"ENVIRONMENT"
ONE YOU GET TO THE WEBSITE YOU CAN PLAY SMALL PREVIEWS OF THE PROGRAMS TO SEE IF YOU ARE INTERESTED AND YOU CAN WATCH THE PROGRAMS ENTIRELY ONLINE.
CBS 60 MINUTES
(Links to an external site.)
NBC DATELINE
(Links to an external site.)
MOTHER JONES MAGAZINE
(Links to an external site.)
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO UNDERSTAND IS THAT YOUR THESIS STATEMENT MUST BE WRITTEN AS AN ARGUMENT.
INCORRECT SAMPLE THESIS STATEMENT:
TODAY, I AM GOING TO PERSUADE THE AUDIENCE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT.
THIS SAMPLE IS NOT WRITTEN PROPERLY (AS AN ARGUMENT) BECAUSE THE SENTENCE DOES NOT TELL THE AUDIENCE WHAT SIDE THE SPEAKER IS ON.
THE WORD "ABOUT" IS ESPECIALLY PROBLEMATIC BECAUSE IT LEAVES THE THESIS AMBIGUOUS. WHAT ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT???????
You must write the thesis statement so that it clearly stated what side you are on.
CORRECT SAMPLE THESIS STATEMENT:
TODAY, I AM GOING TO PERSUADE THE AUDIENCE THAT THE ENVIRONMENT IS IN JEOPARDY AND WE MUST TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION TO SAVE IT.
INCORRECT SAMPLE THESIS STATEMENT:
TODAY I'M GOING TO PERSUADE THE AUDIENCE ABOUT GUN CONTROL.
(WHAT ABOUT IT? ARE YOU FOR IT? AGAINST IT?…..THE WAY THE ABOVE SENTENCE IS WRITTEN WE HAVE NO IDEA.
CORRECT SAMPLE THESIS STATEMENT:
TODAY I'M GOING TO PERSUADE THE AUDIENCE THAT THE UNITED STATES FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHOULD BAN ALL AUTOMATIC AND SEMIAUTOMATIC FIREARMS.

Social Media And Its Side Effects
Attention Getter:Plastic surgery has become an extremely popular trend throughout the past
years of the American culture. There are many reasons why people get plastic surgery, however,
our society is the first to judge an individual for getting a procedure done. The controversy
regarding plastic surgery is extremely relevant and has received major attention through
celebrities, television, and social media. However, many individuals are unaware that there is a
difference between both plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery. Plastic surgery is used for medical
purposes or to reconstruct an issue; on the other hand, cosmetic surgery is used to enhance the
appearance of a person. Although there is a great difference between both procedures, there are
many benefits to undergo them. While some believe plastic and cosmetic surgery are costly and
risky, others believe it is important for medical purposes and self-esteem. Many people associate
Audience Relevance:plastic surgery negatively throughout the years due to the amount of
money that is typically spent on it. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic
Surgery, “more than 12 billion dollars are spent on surgical and nonsurgical procedures in
2013”. State Thesis:That is a tremendous amount of money spent for procedures. This has
become bigger for many reasons. Such as, celebrities spending money on plastic surgery. The
kardashian’s family has spent millions of dollars on plastic surgery the biggest problem in our
society is that nowadays all girls comparing themselves to social media and has become the
biggest problem in our society.
Preview main ideas:that people obtain and others that people are born with. Beauty is one that
you are born with but in the modern world it has become something that is also obtainable. In the
present many people search for ways to improve themselves and have opted for plastic surgery as
a way of becoming a better version…
Extent of the Problem:The reasons why people want to get plastic surgery are many and varied,
from car accident victims to people who indeed just want to make themselves more attractive. As
you move into writing the body of your essay, consider the causes of plastic surgery, as well as
both the advantages and disadvantages. This doesn’t mean you have to be neutral on the topic or
wishy-washy in your argument, but it’s important to recognise that both sides have legitimate
points. For the most part, plastic surgery isn’t needed or necessary. It can be dangerous just like
any other surgery. Do you really want to run the risk of dying just to have bigger boobs or a
prettier face? Apart from people who legitimately need it, like accident victims or people who
are genuinely suffering physical pain, plastic surgery shouldn’t be approved lightly, or done
simply for vanity purposes. People will be much better off learning to love their imperfect bodies
for what they are.
Causes of the problem: In the case of plastic surgery it is mainly used to treat defects after birth
as well as enhance the skin whereby blemishes, acne scars, growths or birthmarks could be
removed. Cosmetic surgery is just to make a person look younger or enhance their appearance.
State current solution: Originally, going under the knife was for those people who had medical
problems such as removing something unsightly. For instance, losing weight can result in excess
skin which is not just ugly but can be uncomfortable. Since then, however, many people have
found that they wanted certain parts of their body improved for cosmetic reasons. Over the
intervening years this need to look and feel good about oneself has not just become a fad but has
become a national obsession. Not just that though, as the need seems to be affecting younger and
younger people.
But is it really necessary? Is natural beauty no longer important? Do you feel that the only way to
solve a problem is to cut it off or straighten it? No one has perfect skin or a perfect body. This
may be an aspiration, but it isn’t truly possible. That said, for some people removing so-called
imperfection can enhance their self worth.
Present personal Solution: In my opinion, everyone has their own beauty instead of comparing
yourself with all the celebrities in the social media we can fix too many things in our life.
Real Estate Thesis: t’s said beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but sometimes the beholder is
you looking in the mirror. And sometimes you don’t like what you see. For some, buying a new
outfit or change of make-up suffices, but for others taking more drastic measures seems to be the
answer.
Summarize main idea: The numbers of individuals electing these surgeries are growing rapidly
each year. Much of this rapid growth is because of advances in technology that have made
plastic surgery techniques both safer and more affordable, as well as cutting down on recovery
time. Cosmetic surgery improves body image and self-esteem and reconstructive surgery fixes
irregularities such as hereditary disorders, birth defects, or other health issues. These surgeries
are an extremely popular method to enhance self-esteem but there are risks an individual should
know before having a surgical procedure.
Provide Closure: is important for the patient not to assume or expect people to be pleased with
the new image. Patients may experience unwanted attention or disappointment when changing
their appearance from close friends, family and the workplace. The changes to physical
appearance may cause social challenges involving disapproving looks; it may cause the patient to
feel isolated or bitter towards others.
Appeal to Action: Challenges such as these may be hard to manage emotionally and mentally
for several reasons. One reason is that surgery results may not appear until days or weeks after
the surgery. Patients should realize their appearance will be worse before a significant difference
is seen. Another reason is postoperative depression which can be common with surgery.
Although surgeons are confident that a surgery is successful, some patients endure feelings of
misery and despair that may last weeks after the surgery.
