Unit 1 Assignment
ETL – Extract, Transform and Load in Excel
Overview:
This assignment creates the basic table that you will be working off of for assignments two and four. You will be taking the raw data in the base data Excel document and combining it in a way that you are able to do some basic analytics on. Good luck and have fun! Some of the Excel videos show Excel 2013. If you have 2010, the Pivot Table Analysis tab is called Options. Some features shown in the video will not be included in Excel 2010; none of these features will be required for any of the assignments, so your ability to complete these assignments will not be compromised at all.
If you run into trouble with the assignments, please use the Watercooler Tab and ask your classmates. I will be monitoring this board to lend a hand as well. Your grade is not dependent on whether you can figure out something on your own; you are graded on your abilities to use the resources you have (within reason) available to you to execute on what needs to be completed.
Instructions:
Using vlookups, display the item name, area, and period month on the All Items tab. Hint:
You will need to use at least two vlookups to link series_id to area code and then to area. The end product will display Item_code, Item_Name, Area_Code, Area and Period_Name on the all_Items tab next to each row of data. Please ensure that your sheet is free of errors (N/A or ref!) when it is turned in. VLookups can be a challenge for those who are not accustom to them, please give yourself time to troubleshoot or reach out for help.
Requirements:
For this and future excel assignments, repeating the action of the tutorials should be done at a minimum. For full credit, make adjustments to formatting, use of other formulas and other additional manipulations that demonstrate that you are gaining the understanding needed in Excel to be a leader in managing analytics.
Please upload your entire Excel workbook to Blackboard when completed.

Unit 2 Assignment
Pivot Table – A Gateway into your Data
Overview:
In this assignment you will take the table you used in the first assignment and place a pivot table and a pivot graph on it. Pivot tables and graphs are a common tool in Excel and often used when you have thousands, tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands of lines. If you are wondering, Excel can handle 1,048,576 total rows. Let your curiosity take you on this one.
Create a pivot table of the data you created for Assignment 1 and add a pivot chart of something you find interesting in this data. Filter the data in a way that makes it digestible(example: one product over 2 years).
Requirements:
For this and future excel assignments, repeating the action of the tutorials should be done at a minimum. For full credit, your ability to make adjustments to formatting, use of other formulas and other additional manipulations will demonstrate that you are gaining the understanding needed in Excel to be a leader in managing analytics.

Unit 4 Assignment
BRD – Business Requirements Document
Overview:
In this assignment you will be asked to create a set of business requirements. As a leader you will often be required to oversee your units’ involvement in the creation of this document and sign off as the business lead. For this assignment, focus on a small analytic project and review chapter eight in the textbook to help shape your ideas.
Instructions:
Look at the business intelligence dashboard samples in Unit 1. Using this and what you have learned so far create a business requirements document for an analytic project either using experiences from your work or your personal life. Assume that any data you need has been collected. This project will be due at the end of Unit 4. Be sure to include a project statement, business purpose, and requirements. Implementation, monitoring, and security will be covered in a future assignment and will not need to be included here.
Requirements:
Using the template attached to this unit as a base, create a basic business requirements document for an analytic project that interests you. For example, create requirements for a dashboard to monitor the cost of wine and cheese from the unit 1 data

Unit 6 Assignment
Present your Findings
Overview:
Finding an amazing discovery using data analytics is a wonderful feeling. Often you are the subject matter expert within your organization doing complex and nuanced analysis. In most situations this is not the last stop for your new insight, you must explain and share your findings with executive leadership who have limited time and limited knowledge of the intricacies of your data. Boiling down your data findings to “need-to-knows” is a hard skill and is the end goal of many of the business intelligence platforms you have viewed in this class. This assignment will have you create a PowerPoint presentation with some of your findings.
The below are some tips using slides from McKinsey and Company. It is not expected that your slides will have the level of graphics shown as McKinsey has departmentsdedicated to their PowerPoints, but the tips are still helpful.
Instructions:
Using the data from Assignments 1 and 2 to look into the prices of bread; please include at least two slides and three charts. Some ideas may be comparing the prices in different areas, prices compared to other items like flour, (which is used to make bread) or cheese, (which is put on bread). Please note that this is not expected to be a research paper on bread; one – three bullet points on each chart is perfect.
Requirements:
Create a PowerPoint with least two slides and three charts and upload it to Blackboard.

? Ram Charan, Execution: The Discipline of Getting Things Done
This assignment will be an executive summary where you will explain your thoughts and ideas around how you would move forward with an analytics project. As a leader in your organization, it will be your task to drive forward projects working cross-department and cross-discipline.
Instructions:
Author an executive summary that is one page single-spaced about how you would implement analytics into an organization. This should cover, at minimum, what groups would be involved? What tools would you use? How would you implement it? What, if any, data would need to be secured and audited?
Requirements:
This should be one page single-spaced and uploaded to Blackboard by Wednesday of Unit 8.
