Description
In his essay, “The Mythology of Love,” Joseph Campbell quotes the poet, Guiraut de Bronelh:
So, through the eyes love attains the heart:
For the eyes are the scouts of the heart,
And the eyes go reconnoitering
For what it would please the heart to possess.
And when they are in full accord
And firm, all three, in the one resolve,
At that time, perfect love is born
From what the eyes have made welcome to the heart.
Not otherwise can love be born or have commencement
Than by this birth and commencement moved by inclination.
Myths about the topic of love–and the related topics of romance and transformation–are commonplace in mythological traditions. We will be discussing how love and romance and transformation figure into the study of myth–and how different traditions treat these topics in ways that are similar, and ways which are different.
Response
Your response to prompts 1-4 are your initial response, for which you are expected to write a total of 200-250 words.
Please do not include any of the prompt’s text (below) in your response:
After reading the texts from Week 3, submit a post exploring the nature of love, romance and transformation as it appears in the readings this week. Examine which stories combine the concepts of love/romance and transformation and which treat these things separately.
Choose two stories from different traditions that have the least similar notions of these concepts. What do you think explains the differences?
Consider an example of love, romance, or transformation from more contemporary media. What insights do you gain from comparing that example to one of the myths we read this week?
Ask one original, objective question (not one requiring a personal or speculative response ) of your classmates focused upon the readings. You could ask a question about transformation or love/romance in a particular mythological tradition, or about a source online that perhaps gives new insight about a tradition (or anything else which is relevant to the topic of our discussion). Remember that your goal is to ask an objective, complex question that will require your classmates to enhance their thinking about this week’s topic and then to write a 125-150 word response (imagine that you are leading a discussion about the term and want to involve the class–this is the question that other students will answer for their replies).
