Consider the discussion of direct democracy processes such as initiatives and referendums in section 7 of chapter 7 (7.5) of the course text. In the U.S., such processes are only available at some state & local levels. For example, in Colorado state-level ballot initiatives have decriminalized the use of marijuana, cut taxes, among other things. Such direct democracy processes, however, are not available at the national level in the U.S. such as in countries like Switzerland or the United Kingdom, for example.
