Write:  A response to today’s discussion question:
I would argue that almost all haunted house stories are really about families.  The “house” in such stories can stand for history–particularly if the house in question is older than the family and has a history of its own.  But it can also stand for the history of the family unit.  You’ve talked in the last post about Jack’s history before he came to the hotel.  Now I’d like you to talk about what happens to Jack, Danny, and Wendy when they are at the hotel.  What tools and tricks does the hotel use to divide Jack from his family?  What do we learn about Wendy and Danny that contributes to their isolation and their reluctance to accept and act on what is going on in the hotel?  Quote particular passages from the novel that give us some insight into what is going on in the characters’ heads, how they are interacting and how they try (and fail) to keep their family from coming apart.  Please be specific and quote passage from the novel.
