Whether or not that is the most appropriate characterization–here starts a scholarly debate that is merited but we don’t need to get into–it is certainly true that the ancient Greeks left an extraordinary legacy of intellectual and cultural achievements that remains influential. At the same time, some aspects of ancient Greek culture and values were very different from ours today, some even deeply troubling.
