Imagine entering a client session with no point of reference—no lens through which to process the information you are gathering. You might not know where to start or how to make sense of the client’s current state and presenting problem. Thankfully, due to the vast array of theories in social work practice, you do not need to go in “blind.” You carry this theoretical knowledge base with you in every client interaction.
The shift to advanced practice marks an important stage in your growth as an emerging social worker. You deepen your knowledge base through the use of more complex theories and frameworks. By exploring these theories, and adding specialized assessments and interventions to your toolbox, your unique perspective as a practitioner begins to form.
In this Discussion, you first examine the difference between advanced and generalist practice before analyzing the importance of theory within that framework.
To Prepare
Review the Learning Resources on advanced social work practice and on the use of theory.
Consider the difference between advanced and generalist social work practice and the role of theory in advanced practice.
By Day 4
Post a description of advanced practice and how you believe it differs from generalist practice in social work. Then, address why it is important for practitioners to use theory in advanced practice. Finally, explain how the use of theory relates to the social issue(s) and associated population you identified in your Discussion 1 video.
By Day 7
Respond to at least two colleagues who addressed a different population than you and identify two possible areas of strength of that population. Explain one way social workers can use those strengths to empower clients within that group.
