this is my classmate work
1. The buddhist’s path, the eightfold path, essentially acts as a blueprint to end suffering; this can change someones life by helping them understand and identify what makes them unhappy, assume a place where those negative entities do not exist and then set a path to get to that place. It is easy to get caught in a cycle of negativity but after understanding and acting on the eight fold path the road to liberation feels almost simple.
2. I believe buddhism is so enticing to people in the west as buddhism is a religion that simply seeks internal happiness. I think in the western part of the world we are particularly bombarded with many negative influences in our society that induce negative emotions. Buddhism for many has been a way to escape and let go of that. From my experience in buddhism, you do not have to be a devoted buddhist to take apart in different rituals or even identify as buddhist to do yoga, mindfulness etc. Any level of dedication feels welcome in this religion and most self identifying buddhist are devoted to guiding anyone who is looking for direction. The ultimate goal is to have inner peace and liberation which is relatable to essentially anyone.
3. Reading and listening to the Dalai Lama’s teaching I found it very interesting how much he has learned about the world from a scientific standpoint and how important he believes there must be a dialog between buddhists and scientists not just in order to obtain the full picture of life but for the expansion of knowledge. There were many ways in which he connected science to religion such as his example of compassion. He thinks buddhism has spiritually been going in the correct direction but has lacked the tools for understanding the material world. He also believes scientists can use the tools buddhism provides for understanding spirituality and the internal mind as it is also greatly beneficial to the work they do. I also found it to be quite interesting and rather important to see how simplistic most of his answers were, they were almost like a “duh” moment. We always want to believe there is a larger than life answer to everything, by reading his teachings that did not feel like the case.
