Scenario
Suppose that the chief administrator of a large prison is interested in developing a psychological measure that can be used to predict which incoming prisoners will be more likely to comply with prison rules and respect the authority of corrections officers. To achieve this goal the prison administrator hires a team of psychological researchers and gives them the assignment to develop a measure of individual differences in submission to authority that can be administered to prisoners with the goal of identifying which individuals might be at risk of these types of discipline problems. The team of researchers constructs a 10-item self-report survey measure that includes items that are designed to assess individual differences in submission to authority. To test the properties of this measure the research team plans to administer the survey to a sample of incoming inmates. Specifically, the survey will be administered to incoming inmates by a corrections officer during the inmate’s initial processing session, when they are first admitted to the prison. The corrections officer will use a list of randomly generated numbers to determine which incoming inmates will be included in the sample. The list contains 500 randomly generated numbers. Each incoming inmate is assigned a number from the list sequentially upon their admission to the prison. The corrections officer proceeds through the list sequentially assigning inmates a number from the list of random numbers until the officer reaches the end of the list. For example, the first number on the list of random numbers will be assigned to the first inmate who is processed for admission after the study is launched, then the next admitted prisoner will be assigned the second number on the list, then the next prisoner gets assigned the third number on the list, and so on until the officer reaches the end of the list. If the number that an inmate is assigned happens to be an even number then that inmate is included in the sample. If the number that an inmate is assigned happens to be an odd number then that inmate is not included in the sample. The research team plans to recruit a sample of 180 participants using this method.Participants receive the following self-administered survey.
