International Small Business Journal o Creativity Research Journal
- Coursework 3: Individual Essay (3,500 words; 50%
- )I. Critically reflect on the Ingenuity in Practice (Kirkham, Mosey & Binks, 2009) creative problem-solving process. Use academic references and practical examples to a) evaluate the Ingenuity process of entrepreneurial creativity and b) identify key factors influencing the effectiveness of its use for creative problem-solving in groups
- This coursework should include two main contributions
- The first should demonstrate an understanding of the key ways in which entrepreneurial creativity and the creative problem solving process are interpreted by Ingenuity in Practice, including descriptions of: how it defines the concept of creativity; how it interprets who and/or what is able to engage in creativity; how and why it configures the process of creative problem solving in the way it does; and how it interprets the roles of individuals and the social interactions between group members in the creative process.
- The second contribution should be a critical reflection on Ingenuity in Practice as a process of creative problem solving, and the key factors that influence the effectiveness of its use within groups. This analysis should be informed through the theoretical, empirical, and practical content included within the module. Higher grades will be awarded to work that integrates both theoretical and practical examples of creativity and entrepreneurship into the evaluation. You should therefore attempt to demonstrate your understanding of the links between the Ingenuity process and various aspects of the literature, including (but not limited to): creativity theory, creative problem-solving practices, group creativity, entrepreneurship, and entrepreneurial behaviour. Your evaluation therefore needs to be carefully argued, making sure that your claims are supported by appropriate theory, critical analysis, empirical evidence, and practical examples.
- Each contribution will be equally weighted and should therefore be approximately 1,750 words in length. The coursework will marked in line with the MSc marking guides (outlined on page 11) and the following criteria will be used in the assessment of your work:Comprehension – Your knowledge and understanding of the theoretical, empirical and practical content of the module, how accurately you describe these materials and how
appropriately they are applied to your critical reflection on the Ingenuity process and factors influencing group-based creative problem solving. Your understanding of the debates within creativity and entrepreneurship theory and your ability to synthesise the literature from creativity and entrepreneurship research. Mistakes in comprehension may constitute major errors, problems with synthesis may constitute a minor error.
Argumentation – Your ability to use argument to support your critical reflection on the Ingenuity process. This includes: drawing upon appropriate supporting evidence; using critical analysis to highlight problems and tensions within theory that lead to your points; comparing and contrasting alternative theories of creativity and creative problem solving to those underpinning Ingenuity; how you combine insights to support your overall evaluation; and appropriateness of your conclusions. Absence of any form of argument would be a major error, problems with the argument presented may constitute a minor error.
Relevance to practice – Your ability to demonstrate understanding of the relationship between theories and practical examples of creative problem solving. This can include, for example, notable cases of entrepreneurial creativity or illustrations from your own use of the Ingenuity process. Absence of discussion of practice would be a major error, inappropriate application of theory to practice (and vice versa) may be a minor error.
Originality – Your ability to present original evaluative insights or identify new tensions, issues, or problems within existing creativity and entrepreneurship theory and/or to suggest new topics for research to explore. Lack of originality would not be a major or minor error. Essays with original insights will be more likely to be awarded the highest grades (80%+) if all other criteria are satisfied.
In order to complete this work, you will need to find and use relevant academic journal articles and will therefore need to search the journal databases to support your analysis. Most of the journal titles within the business databases will have relevant articles. The following keywords will help you find these: creativity (individual and group), entrepreneurship, discovery, and opportunity. The module reading list offers an extensive list of relevant articles but it is important not to limit yourself to these.
