Case 1 Schizophreniform
John Smith is a 22-year-old Caucasian male currently enrolled in college. For the past month John has been going to classes less frequently, stopped going out with his friends, and spends most of his time locked in his room. In the same period, John has reported for the last month seeing hallucinations in the form of visual, auditory, olfactory, and tactile. John’s roommates decided to take him to their local hospital despite his disbelief that he was hallucinating, but rather under the belief he was going to seek treatment for his delusions. Once at the hospital, John received diagnostic testing prior to being transferred to the psychiatric wing. At the hospital John presented as unkempt, had a flat affect, and appeared under distress. After a couple of days, the hospital psychiatrist diagnosed John with Schizophreniform disorder based on his symptoms.
Case 2 Cyclothymia
Marco is a 16-year-old white male, who presents to the clinic with his Mother Jane. After Marco’s Dad passed away a year ago he has been experiencing periods of mild depression with alternate episodes of euphoria. In his dysthymic episodes Marco loses interest in life, has lack of productivity, lack of sleep and feels hopeless. When Marco is in this episode he doesn’t go to school. While his euphoric episodes Marco is very talkative so much that he is unable to complete his tasks. Marco thinks he’s so smart that there is no need to listen to his teachers. He explains that he has racing thoughts. Marco has few friends since he becomes very irritable.His friends and mother describes him as “moody”. Jane the mother is concerned that Marco is failing all his classes and is unable to retain friends. Marco doesn’t have a PMH and denies the use of drugs or alcohol.
