Assignment 2: Theory Analysis
Assignment Goal:
Students will write a 4-page research paper in which you compare and contrast two theories of human behavior that we have discussed in class. The assignment will be graded on the clarity of writing, proper use of grammar, good sentence and paragraph structure, and accurate use of theoretical terms and concepts.
Assignment Purpose:
This paper should go beyond a summary or description of each theory. It must be an analysis of the ways in which the theories are similar or different about the following dimensions:
Identify two theories and at least one major theorist associated with each theory
Name and discuss several major concepts of each theory
Discuss the ways in which the theory is or is not consistent with social work values and principles, and addresses issues of power and oppression, diversity, including gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, and economic status
Discuss the view of health and mental illness according to the theory
Provide a critical summary of each theorys strengths and weaknesses
Include your thoughts about the usefulness of the theory to social work practice including how the theories can help you understand/assess the clients with whom you may work.
Assignment Format:
Your paper should include a brief introduction and summary paragraph. It is expected that students would use a minimum of 3 to 5 authoritative sources (peer reviewed journal articles and books) for this paper. Internet sources such as SimplyPsychology.com, etc. are not acceptable in this type of research paper.
Students should submit an outline with the final paper to your instructor. This outline should include a reference page that includes the sources you will use in your paper.
This written assignment offers another method (in addition to tests, oral presentations, and smaller in-class paired assignments) for assessing students mastery of course content. This is an independent, written assignment completed outside of class time.
