You will create a lesson plan designed for any range from toddler to Grade 3
Overview: You will create a lesson plan designed for any range from toddler to Grade 3 (approximately ages 18 months to age eight). For lesson plans for grades K-2, you will use the Common Core State standards for your selected grade. You will also describe how your lesson plan is developmentally appropriate for the designated age group. Keep in mind the intention of the activity (i.e., the purpose, what children will gain from the activity, etc.).
Additional Tips:
When preparing your lesson, be sure to do the following:
- You may choose any grade level (toddler to Grade 3) and any content area (language arts, math, science, social science, art, music, physical education, etc.). For example, you may do a preschool lesson on shapes/colors, or you might do a 2nd grade science lesson analyzing the properties of different rocks.
- Make sure objectives are measurable (avoid words like ‘learn’, ‘know’, ‘understand’ because those concepts are not easily measured
- Use the provided WLAC CD lesson plan template when writing your lesson, and thoroughly complete each section
- Be sure to include the Preschool Learning Foundations standards in the Objectives section if you are doing preschool. You can find the standards at : https://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/cd/re/documents/preschoollf.pdf (Links to an external site.)
Be sure to use the Common Core/California Content Standard in the Objectives section if you are doing grades K-3. You can find standards at http://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/index.asp (Links to an external site.)
- Use as much detail as possible when explaining each section, i.e. indicate what the teacher will be doing and/or what the student will be doing, indicate what handout or resource is being used, etc. A simple rule of thumb is to ask yourself, “If a substitute teacher were to walk in tomorrow to teach this lesson, would they be able to successfully do so by following my lesson plan?”
Here are some resources to help you develop your lesson plan:
- If you are doing a preschool lesson plan (ages 18 months to 4) please select your Learning Goal/Objective from the Preschool Foundation Download Preschool Foundation of your choosing.
- If you are doing a lesson plan for K-3, please select your Learning Goal/Objective from the Common Core State Standards. There are LOTS to choose from, so try not be be overwhelmed. First, decide on the grade and content area (i.e. Language Arts, Science, Math, Social Studies, Visual and Performing Arts, Physical Education, etc.).
