Trait theories

As you read in your textbook, trait theories often assume that traits are stable across situation and across the lifespan. It is also assumed that personality can predict behavior. And to some extent, our collective culture buys into this idea. I’m sure you have heard phrases like “a leopard never changes their spots” or “once a cheater, always a cheater”. It seems we find it difficult to believe that people’s personalities can change or by extension their behavior can change. 

But how can we be so sure that trait theories accurately describe human personality? Certainly there is controversial research that supports traits being real, but there is also some research suggesting that traits and, in turn, behavior may change based on the situation or may change across a lifetime. Your discussion question this week has 2 parts.
