This essay exam is worth 250 points and is July 26th at 11:30pm. Submit your final exam as a .doc or .docx file using the Canvas Assignments tab. Do not wait until the last minute to submit as these points are absolutely critical to your grade.
Carefully read the following instructions and select one (1) of the four questions to address in your essay. Be certain to follow the specific guidelines stipulated for this assignment and to respond to each component of the question.
Questions (choose one)
1. Discuss the factors that may explain why, when compared to other nations, the United States spends so much more on health care with limited population coverage. Given the current health care system in the United States, please create an ideal health care system using aspects of at least 3 other countries. Be sure to address key areas such as: wait times; premiums and finance; and access to specialized care and technology. Include in your discussion the current status of the Affordable Care Act .
2. How has the aging population contributed to the increases in U.S health care costs and why is long-term care an increasingly important issue? How has the aging population influenced our focus on other healthcare factors such as pharmaceutical expenses, consumer demand, and the cost of new technology? How will adequate education in long-term care processes contribute to a health care system that ensures financial stability, quality service, and seamless access for all individuals that use LTC services or are involved in the delivery of LTC services?
3. The concept of patient-centered care is widely accepted in the health care arena but implementation has not been easily achieved. Patient-centered care focuses on the needs and expectations of the patient. Some key components of this concept include access to care (convenient and timely), access to health IT, coordination and continuity of care, integrated team care that emphasizes free flow of communication, and engagement in care. Which of these components do you feel is most integral in fully achieving patient-centered care and why? What do you see as being the biggest challenge that has prevented providers from implementing the attributes of patient- centered care and in what ways can providers overcome these challenges?
4. Management information systems and informatics applications can improve quality of health care and access to health care while potentially lowering cost of health care. Describe how these three outcomes are possible through the use of informatics and discuss the pros/cons of implementing these IT innovations into our current healthcare system. Include in your discussion the effect of the incentives for Health Information Technology developed as part of the HITECH Act.
Write a 6-page essay using Arial 12 typeface, 1-inch margins all around and 1.5 line spacing. In your essay, clearly identify the following components:
On the first page, upper right-hand corner, include your full name, date, course name, title of your essay (question that you chose) and a pledge that you have not plagiarized any aspect of this assignment. On the rest of this first page (use as much of this first page as possible after the 5 heading lines), provide an executive summary of your essay. Compose an executive summary that effectively reflects your conclusions and recommendations. (This section is worth 40 points)
On the top of page 2, add a subtitle and use pages 2 and 3 to explain the issue that is central to the question that you selected. State your personal position on this issue based on written discussions and case studies assigned this semester as well as any sources of information that you feel will provide robust support for your perspective. Select a minimum of three credible, current, scholarly references to support your arguments (your textbook can serve as one such source). Use APA Style for your parenthetical citations throughout the paper and for your reference list. (This section is worth 80 points)
On the top of page 4, add a different subtitle for this section and use page 4 to review any recent documents or developments related to legislative policy, enacted or proposed, related to the topic that you chose and discuss how those may pertain to the central issue in your question. Explain how your position aligns with or opposes the legislative trends. No less than 2 and no more than 3 references are to be used in this section with the respective parenthetical APA citations when appropriate. All references should be no more than 3 years old. (This section is worth 70 points)
On page 5 present a summary of your conclusions in the form of a table. (Include one column in which you identify and define the key points or issues, a second column with your position on that issue and a third column with how the issues relate to currently discussed legislative strategies or proposals. Use the entire page for this section. You may use single space and size 10 font for this table only. (This section referenced as Document Review in the grading rubric and is worth 70 points)
On page 6 include your references for your citations. Use APA style for all references, including your Internet references with precise URLs. A link to the reference alone is not acceptable to meet this requirement. Do not include references that you did not cite in your essay. All your Internet references should be of reliable websites (i.e. .gov, .org, etc.). News items and blogs are not generally credible references.
Please be sure to adhere to the page guidelines. Do not exceed the page limit and do not submit a paper shorter than the required number of pages. For example, if you are asked to write 2 pages for a specific section, please do not write 2.25 pages or 1.5 pages. Also, number each page, except the first page, at the bottom center of the page. (Formatting and conclusion are worth 60 points)
