Sensoy and DiAngelo argue that privilege is not the product of luck, happenstance, or natural occurrence.
Based on the required readings and materials for week 3, please answer the following questions
In chapter 6, Sensoy and DiAngelo argue that privilege is not the product of luck, happenstance, or natural occurrence. If it is not any of these things, then what is it?
How did the video you watched: “Teaching Beyond the Textbook” as part of this week’s materials helped you understand the concept of ableism?
- What concepts did you learn in mindfulness practice this week? How do these concepts can help you develop your socio-cultural awareness/growth? (Feel free to share a story that reflects the impact that mindfulness practice had in your life this week).
- 1. The authors define privilege as the social and institutional advantages that the dominant group automatically receives because of their occupation of the position of power in society. Structural privilege is the result of society conforming around the dominant group – think clothing for people living in a binary frame of mind (clothing is male or female rather than non-gendered). In some ways privilege can dominate on a numerical value – there are more people that live in a male-female binary, rather than gender fluid/ non-gender conforming persons; but I found the authors clause to this case being critical to understanding privilege – this is not always the case because as the authors say men are not in a more numerical advantage than women but hold social and institutional power over women. Power is everything in how society shapes privileges for those that wield power for the advantaged. 2. This video was actually really a nice reprieve from the challenges that this past week has been with all of the news in the U.S., so thank you actually. I found this video to be great about challenging stereotypes of persons in special education classes because it highlights their goals and dreams which really are the same for so many kids. This educator seems to also have huge buy-in from the students and see him as wanting to not treat them in any special way, and what they want is to be challenged in a rigorous academic setting the same as all students.3. I found the immobility response to be quite unique and interesting to learn about as it relates to trauma, particularly how humans process traumas. Trauma, as studied often in Eastern philosophies/ yoga/ medicines, is generally a long-term energy source that lives within the body and can effects on our day to day living. In Yoga the understanding of trauma is that it is located in the hips, where the root chakra is located which is the space of safety and is blocked by fear. Trauma locating itself in this energy space makes sense, and is often from my experience and anecdotal experience of others, is released in hip opening postures that allow individuals to notice the build up energy. This is done by a classmate, you can look at it and reply to her
