Topic Question: Which Psychological Perspective will best predict the inmate’s future behavior?
What IS a Socratic Seminar?
- In a Socratic Seminar activity, students help one another understand the ideas, issues, and applications of the course Learning Objective.
- Students accomplish this by answering an open ended question in a discussion atmosphere.
- Students are responsible for facilitating their group discussion around ideas .
- A Socratic Seminar should NOT be a student trying to convince others to have their same opinion, nor should the discussion be a chance to win a debate.
- Through this type of discussion, students practice how to listen to one another, make meaning, and find common ground while participating in a conversation.

Description of Crime: On 4/20/2015 at 8:34 AM, inmate entered Horizon bank (3651 Franklin St., Michigan City, IN) with a Glock G29. He wore a black ski mask, walked up to Teller 1 (Erin Johnson), and pointed the gun at her. Inmate shouted that if anyone in the bank moved he would shoot Johnson. Inmate demanded Johnson fill the brown sack inmate had brought with him full of money. Johnson was seen on security video camera’s placing money into the sack. At 8:42 AM, inmate exited Horizon bank.
Time in prison: Inmate has received two infractions. 9/21/2015 assault on another inmate & 1/4/2016 contraband found in cell. Trained and completed certificate to become barber in 2016. Obtained G.E.D. in 2017 through education program. Obtained welding certification through Ivy Tech in 2019.
Socratic Seminar Requirements/To Do List:
1.) The student must find 1 academic research article to support their answer to the topic question.
2.) The student will save the article and upload it to this assignment box OR copy/paste the link to the source and place it below in the text box.
3.) Each student will need to participate (speak at least 2x) during the 30 minute discussion conducted in class. This discussion will be based upon the question above. Each student will need to reference their source at some point during the discussion.
