Submit: Critical Thinking Healthy Aging Analysis Oral Presentation
This assignment is a component of this programs Outcome Assessment Plan which evaluates students critical thinking. Students who receive less than 77% will be required to modify until a passing grade has been reached. The students original grade will be the only one counted toward the final grade.
At the completion of this Oral Presentation students will be able to meet the following objectives:
Assess the living environment as it relates to functional, physical, cognitive, psychological and social needs of older adults
Identify actual or potential mistreatment (physical, mental or financial, or self-neglect) in older adults and refer appropriately
Recognize ethical, non-coercive decision making by older adults and/or families/caregivers for maintaining everyday living, receiving treatment, initiating advance directives and implementing end-of-life care
Compare models of care that promote safe, quality physical and mental health care for older adults
Identify diverse health/illness beliefs, values, attitudes and practices of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations that affect the care of older adults
Identify safe and effective transitions across levels of care and the increased use of healthcare resources including acute, community-based and long-term care (e.g. home, family home, assisted living, hospice, nursing homes, palliative care) by older adult
Utilize critical thinking skills to promote healthy aging through safe and effective decision-making
Directions for Oral Presentation:
The oral presentation should be 10 – 15 minutes. Be creative!!!
Students are required to visit two of the settings listed below.
Students are not allowed to complete both a Spiritual Observation and Home Assessment to fulfill the two option requirements. If you choose one of these, you must choose a more complicated setting, such as the Active Aging Observation or the Residential Living Facility Assessment as your second option.

Ask your instructor any questions you have regarding this assignment or if you need help locating a facility to visit.
Answer the following questions in your Oral Presentation based on the two settings you visit.
ACTIVE AGING OBSERVATION
Locate a community facility, organization, etc., where older adults regularly congregate (i.e.: Senior Center, Senior Nutrition Site).
Setting: Describe the setting. Where is it located, what is the community like, what is the physical environment?
Facilitators: Who are the facilitators? What is there background to have this position?
Population: Describe the population you observe. What modes of transportation were utilized to get them to the facility?
Frequency: How often do attendees meet?
Facility Goals: What are the goals of the facility? What are the goals of the event or activity you are observing?
Socialization: How are needs for elderly socialization met?
Improvement: What are areas of needed improvement that you would initiate? (Both for the facility or the individual event attended)

SPIRITUAL OBSERVATION
Attend a House of Worship (preferably a House of Worship different than your own).
Setting: Identify where you went and the denomination. Where is it located, what is the community like, what is the physical environment?
Social and emotional needs: How are the needs of older adults in this Spiritual Community (or congregation) addressed?
How are older adults treated in this Spiritual Community?
Comparison: How is this congregation or House of Worship different from your own personal beliefs or House of Worship?
How are Felician Values embodied in this Spiritual Community?

HOME ASSESSMENT
Visit the home of an older adult who is a family member or friend. Assess the benefits/disadvantages of the living situation by evaluating the following:
Physical and medical needs: Include ability to perform ADLs, take medications, and need for assistance.
Social and emotional needs: Presence or interaction with friends, family, grandchildren, pets, etc.
Finances: How are household bills, medical bills, and insurance entitlements handled / paid for?
Neighborhood: Safety, community resources, and ethnic identity of the neighborhood. Can the older adult go outside safely?
Transportation access: Can the shopping centers, medical providers, etc. be accessed?
Spiritual needs: How are the spiritual needs of the individual met?
Home maintenance: Who is responsible for maintaining the home and is more assistance available? Is the home safe?
Future Needs: Is there a plan for the future if the needs of the older adult change?

NOTE: Safety is a key concern in the community. Do not plan this visit with someone unknown or take another individual/classmate with you.
RESIDENTIAL LIVING FACILITY ASSESSMENT
Visit a Residential Living Facility. This can be a Senior Living Community, Assisted Living, or Long-Term Care Facility.
Environment: Describe the physical environment.
Physical and medical needs: Include ability to perform ADLs, take medications, and need for assistance.
Social and emotional needs: Presence or interaction with friends, family, grandchildren, pets, etc.
Spiritual needs: How are spiritual needs addressed?
Respect: Is respecting the individuality and uniqueness of the residents an integral part of the program? Describe.
Finances: What is the reimbursement method for care?
Assessment: What is your assessment of the facility? What changes would you initiate?
Article: Validate your suggestions for change utilizing a NURSING RESEARCH article.
Video Submission Information and Help:
You may submit the video in any format that youd like as long as other students and instructors will be able to easily view the video without downloading or installing software.
