Scenario 1
The main offices of a manufacturing company are located in Texas and it is your task to design their network configuration. There are four main sites:
Dallas HQ – this site is the Hub of the Frame Relay Circuit and it is also the main point of connection to the public Internet.
Ft. Worth – this site contains the server farm for internal and external use. There are also some admin staff located who manage/monitor the servers to which they have direct contact.
Austin – this site houses the main manufacturing and car assembly factory. The site at Building 2 now contains the new modernized factory and Building 1 will be transformed into offices in the future. Within Building 2 site there are two VLANs, one for Management Staff, and the other for Factory Staff. There is also a Wireless Access Point from which management staff connect PDA’s whilst they are on the factory floor. As things stand, there has been no development at Building 1 and it only houses the Frame Relay connection back to Dallas_HQ.
Houston – this site houses most of the administration staff and various departments. Since team such as Engineers, Marketing, & Factory Administrators are located here, then we must ensure 100% connectivity and redundancy. The offices consist of four floors, with each department on their own individual VLAN.
Scenario 2
Several medical offices decided to consolidate their businesses to leverage their business and offer better service to their patients. All five offices will remain intact, one in the center of the city, one in the north, another in the south, and the remaining two on the east and west sides. Each of the lead doctors would like to be able to see their patients at any of the sites, and access any of their patients’ information from any of the sites.
The office in the center of the city has a local area network (LAN) in the building that will require upgrades in software and hardware because all the equipment are all very dated. The upgrades will ensure the system capability and capacity that can provide a centralized solution to the data storage and management for the new partnership among all the five offices as well as meeting the additional information and communications needs for the distributed nature of the new partnership. Therefore, this office will be the official central office that handles all the data communications for the entire business. Patient information and major services such as billing and insurance will be hosted in this location for access by all sites.
Both the North and South offices are equipped with standalone personal computers of different ages. No networking capability exists within and between the sites. Each site has a dedicated computer that handles the billing and insurance using a 56Kbps modem. Each office keeps patient information and other related data on several personal computers scattered in the offices, and all patients’ records are manually filed with the hardcopy printouts the in the old fashion. Each computer in both offices has a locally attached low-end printer.
Scenario 3
As a network design engineer, you are being sent to the main site of a business named Retail/Wholesale Sales. The business sells various retail merchandise. The business sells to both retail and wholesale customers, so on any given day they have customers who just walk in off the street as well as buyers purchasing merchandise for numerous stores. They want to be involved in Internet sales so their network will need to have Internet connectivity. They also want their own corporate e-mail server. They are considering VoIP at each location.
Their main facility is a three story building. It will use the first floor for retail, the second floor for management, a training room, and other non-retail staff such as a call center for personnel receiving calls from Internet and catalog customers. The basement will be for warehousing a small inventory.
The second facility is a smaller retail annex across town from the main facility. It is a one story building with a retail store and internet sales. A small inventory will be maintained on site.
The main warehouse facility, which is in another city, will use the second floor for management and other non-retail staff such as a call center for personnel receiving calls from vendors and internet customers. The first floor is for warehousing
Your engineering responsibility is to design a fully switched network. You are to detail the necessary costs involved for all aspects of this project to include all drops, runs, and equipment. To price your network solution, your engineering SOW (statement of work) will consist of the, network operating systems, application software, TCP/IP architecture, servers, switches, routers (network infrastructure), and all workstations and printers (user devices). Make sure there are sufficient numbers and types of servers, server racks, cabling, connections, switches, and routers with a CSU/DSU. Your design should allow for a 10% future growth in the number of employees on the network.
