For your last homework assignment, you will be writing a condensed version of a book review. The purpose of this book review is to go beyond summarizing the events that took place in Dasani's life as recounted by Andrea Elliot. The Invisible Child: Poverty, Survival & Hope in an American City is divided up into 7 parts – we will divide those 7 parts into 2 sections for your summaries. Following this structure, you will A) summarize parts 1-4 and parts 5-7 (4pts) and B) offer your critique of the book as a whole (4pts). Details below:

A) Accurately summarizes the main ideas, themes, topics, and characters discussed in each of the 2 sections (parts 1-4 and parts 5-7). Gives the reader a feel for what the book is about and whether it might interest them without giving away too much. Rather than tell the reader a timeline recount of the book, focus on the arguments and ideas being grappled with throughout. What do the stories of the book represent, what do they tell us and teach us – what are the key messages being delivered? Summaries should be a minimum of 4 sentences each if not more.

B) Critique consists of thoughts, responses, and reactions to the themes, ideas, and the author's intent. Assesses the relevance and originality of the work, its conceptual framework and assumptions, the strength of its arguments, its use of evidence, and the effectiveness of its presentation (i.e., writing quality and organization). Example questions to consider include: Is there anything controversial that audiences or readers should be aware of? What global issues should readers be aware of? Does the author's logic make sense? Is there any logic to the author's main points? Does that logic flow naturally from the information presented? Does the author emphasize ideas, social forces, individual personalities, or something else? Do you find the author's analytical choices appropriate?
