Anesthesia is the induction or administration of of a drug to lose partial or complet sensation. Thought there are several different kinds of anesthesia I will be discussing four of the different kinds and what the typical use is for them. Local anesthesia is placed on the area involved to achieve the loss of sensation, you can also use local anesthesia as a subcutaneous injection as well. The use of local anesthesia is used in procedures to remove moles and give side stitches. General anesthesia is used to place the individual in an unconscious state through the use of administering drugs intramuscularly, intravenously, inhalation, and rectally. General anesthesia is used during surgeries, and some dental procedures. Spinal or also known as intraspinal anesthesia is the injection of a local anesthetic in to the subarachnoid space around the spinal cord. Intraspinal anesthesia is most commonly used during child birth. Epidural anesthesia is an injection of a local anesthetic in to the spaces between the vertebrae. Epidural anesthesia can be used to treat back pain as well as during child birth.
