France is attempting to pass a bill to ban the hijab. Why?
-France is attempting to pass a bill that bans the hijab from being worn in all sports events. The senate declined to vote on the bill, but it is now passed on to France’s National Assembly as of February 16, 2022. The National Assembly has the final vote. They do not want any religious or racial propaganda at the Olympic games in 2024 that will take place in Paris.
-France has a history of banning and discriminating against women who wear a headscarf. Women can not work at hospitals, stores, restaurants, schools, or any public workplace with a hijab on. Girls can’t wear it in school either.

There’s been ongoing prejudice and stereotypes by people in France against the hijab. They have a preconception that all women who wear a hijab must be practicing an extremist religion and that being modest is not feminist.

They have this notion that if it’s worn for religious reasons, it must mean that that individual is oppressed due to their culture and religious practices.
