Hypothesis: The effectiveness of Ascorbic acid in preventing or curing the common.
The hypothesis focuses on analyzing ascorbic acid's effectiveness in preventing or curing the common cold. In this instance, an in-depth analysis cannot come to the bottom of this. There has existed an idea that ascorbic acid can help prevent or cure the common cold through the years. However, this belief has not been shared by official bodies, authorities on nutrition and physicians. This means that a hypothesis can be used to analyze the hypothesis.
Null hypothesis: Children given ascorbic acid are not likely to suffer from the common cold during the flu season.
Alternative hypothesis: Children given ascorbic acid are less likely to suffer from the common cold during the flu season.
Significance level: The significance level represents the measure of strength in the available evidence that should be evident in a sample before rejecting a null hypothesis and coming to a conclusion that an effect is significant statistically (Emmert-Streib & Dehmer, 2019). In this case, the significant level to be used is 0.05.
P-value: A p-value can be described as a probability that a notable difference could have happened randomly (Emmert-Streib & Dehmer, 2019). From this, the less the p-value, the higher the chances that the statistical significance of the noted difference. This value can be considered an alternative in addition to pre-chosen confidence levels used in hypothesis testing. The p-value is considered at 0.20
Conclusion: One group was offered ascorbic acid during the flu season in this setting. The other group was given a placebo. Records were kept indicating whether or not the participants got sick during this season of flu. After carrying out the statistical analysis, a p-value of 0.20 was determined. There was no support for the alternative hypothesis that ascorbic acid can prevent the common cold during the flu season from the experiment.
