The film I chose to do an analysis on is The Dark Knight which is an action movie that was directed by Christopher Nolan. I chose to analyze The Dark Knight because it shows many interesting points of mis-en-scene that creates a scene that some may think that is diverting which is a stereotypical action genre. The Dark Knight uses so many aspects. One aspect is the camera angle that is used to create a contrast expectation. In this analysis I will go over the other aspects that include: setting and shot, composition, cut, and montage; and how each of these notions influences the audience.

In the Dark Knight the Joker (Heath Ledger) promises to get rid of Batman in exchange for high amount of money, as well as putting the hit out on Gotham’s District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), who later in the film turns into Two-Face and is on the side of Joker. In the film, Batman (Christian Bale) and Dent team up with Lt. James Gordon (Gary Oldman) to put the mob’s money launderer out of business. Batman tries to hand on as best as he can, but when his best friend Rachel is put in the middle of it all and murdered, Batman begins to question how far he’ll go to bring the Joker down.

The Joker who now has Harvey/ Two-Face on his side tries to take down Batman, Kidnapping Gordon’s family, leaving Batman to leave in a hurry and save the day. In the fight, Harvey dies, and Batman was able to save Gordon’s family. He was not able to stop what happened to Harvey and soon Harvey’s death hit the criminals he put away, who are now back on the street. The only way for Batman to put an end to it, is by blaming himself for the crimes Harvey committed. This puts Gotham back in the safe zone but at the cost of the one man who made it all possible.

The setting within the film takes place in an interrogation room in the basement of Gotham police department. It is a natural location that is like many of the police films that is mostly dirty and isolated. The interrogation room is filled with white walls with markings on them, a dirty floor, two-way mirror and bright lights. The setting of the film allows the audience to focus more on the action and speech that take place. The office becomes the direct contrast to this. It is very cluttered with desks, filing cabinets and papers. The police officers fill the room, showing their interest into the interrogation of the Joker.

The shot and the composition of the film is very important. The open framing of the scene allows the characters to move in and out as they wish. The only exception is the Joker, who seem to be the highest influence of the space. This gives the film an uneasy atmosphere for the audience as they are unlikely to notice who is in control of the situation. There is a nosey nature surrounding this scene, as police officers listen in and watch from outside the interrogation room. Nevertheless, the fact that one of the nosey two-way mirrors is smashed clearly signify a link between the interrogation room and the office, opening the frame. However, this link is restricted by Batman placing a chair against the door. This just shows that the frame is controlled, by both Commissioner Gordon’s security door and Batman’s placement of the chair.

The cut in the film The Dark Knight have a certain mysterious quality to it. It makes the audience feel that they can see certain scenes but really cannot. One of the cuts that was made to The Dark Knight was when the Joker breaks into Bruce Wayne penthouse, crashing the fundraiser party for Harvey Dent. The joker then turns his attention to Rachel and becomes distracted just enough for Batman to intervene, culminating in the Joker throwing Rachel out the window as Batman catches her. The scene ends there without any explanation on how the Joker got away, which becomes very confusing to some people. There was a short scene of the Joker getting away in a car driven by an unknown henchman. I believe the Christopher Nolan felt it wouldn’t work with the pace of the film and decided to cut it out the movie. There are no questions asked the scene would have lasted for a moment but knowing that there is a scene of the Late Heath Ledger.

Filmmakers work against the idea of continuity cutting and using the emotional rather than linear time. (101)
