The design blog is an essential part of this course. Your blog will be used to keep track of stylistic characteristics of designs that are covered in this class and that you observe, either in person or from images.
For each style covered in the unit, find at least one example of an interior component used in a modern way. Selections may include entire rooms or specific items within an interior (furniture, fabric, use of space, etc.…). In this entry, please include styles from Shaker, Thonet, and Arts and Craft. This will be 3 separate pages, 1 for each style listed. (at least 200 words for each page)
Good sources for this material include: Interior Design Magazine, Metropolis, Houzz.com, Elle Decor and professional associations’ publications. Do not use images from books or magazines that are specifically about the assigned style (i.e., do not Google “Egyptian furniture” and cut and paste an image).
An example of a Design Blog (Unit 2) is provided as a guide on what is expected. Note: this is one of many ways to create a blog. Do not let this example limit your creativity; the only take away from this example is the combination of text and images. Be sure to provide sufficient text and images within your blogs each week.
Include a brief description of the item/interior, where you observed it, and why you place it in the particular design style. Also include any personal thoughts; please remember to include links and images.
MODERNHISTORICAL
SHAKER
Stair Case The historical detailing of the railing to the modern railing have a connection within the exaggeration of the round stair case. The Shaker stair case consisted of beadings, moldings, and cornices. Today the modern stair case connects to the historical staircase by having different types of moldings and woods. While there are many different types of staircases a round stair case is very elegant. It is detailed from top to bottom.
While you see many different types of staircases today I think a traditional round stair case connects best with a shaker one. Typically the modern stair case doesn't have a traditional railing unless it is a older home. Today the modern railing is glass or metal.

THONET
Chair The historical Thonet chair designed by Michael Thonet was known as the Consumer Chair. The chair was known to have seated more people than any chair in history. This chair was simple and unique. The light wood chair had 6 parts 10 screws and 2 washers. The historical detail is shown in the modern one by being simplistic as well.
The modern chair is almost an exact replica of the historical chair . It only consist of 6 parts. It has the round backing and round seat. The legs of the historical one and modern one both flare out at the same angle. Typically this chair is used as a dining chair or casual seating.

ARTS & CRAFT
WALLPAPER The historical arts and craft wallpaper was filled with floral detailing and bright colors. This wallpaper in particular is filled with many different greens. From the yellow green to the dark green, the modern and historical one connect with the floral detailing and light greens.
Typically these wallpapers were in gatherings rooms and would add a great touch to a room. The patterns were consistent and repetitive. The floral would have a rhythm to it. The same pattern repeated over and over.
