This Reflection Paper assignment asks you to provide your reflections on 1. the significance of “Framing” per Bolman and Deal; 4. the power and impact of the organizational culture considerations per Edgar Schein; and 3. how you see the intersections, or lack thereof, of the Framing approach with the culture work of Schein
1. What aspects of the classical and neoclassical theorists that Bolman and Deal reference resonate with you most and describe how you see them apply, or not, to where you work now or have worked in the past?
2. Mintzberg describes organizations in terms of simple structure, machine structure, professional structure, divisionalized structure and adhocracy. These are “pure structures” intended to show directions organizations get pulled toward based on horizontal and vertical integration, and differentiation in the process of adapting to constant changes in the external environment. Discuss Mintzberg’s Structure in 5’s (Bolman and Deal, page 77-82). (You will note that Mintzberg uses “5” for a lot of his work). How do you see these “pure” models play out in the direction(s) your organization is pulled? How do they apply to your current work organization or any of your previous work organizations?
3. How do you see the precepts and principles of the readings from Bolman and Deal, and Schein, these past two weeks come into focus as a whole, overlap and align? Where do they diverge?
