The focus of this week was uncovering how we develop personal knowledge and the importance of asking critical questions that underpin meaning and significance. Using the assigned readings and your professional experience as a starting point, answer the following:
Compare and contrast the main attributes of personal and aesthetic knowledge development. In your response, describe how both types of knowledge development are important for making advancements in nursing practice.
Identify how personal knowledge leads to personal shifts in aesthetic knowing. In your response, discuss how asking the critical questions, “What does this mean?” and “How is it significant?” can be used to cultivate aesthetic knowing.
Chinn and Kramer (2018) suggest “knowing refers to the ways of perceiving and understanding the self and the world and knowledge refers to knowing that is expressed and communicated with others” (p.3). These concepts influence both personal and aesthetic knowing in nursing as it relates to the impact each has on the provider, patient, environment, and health status. When deciding to become a nurse, a person must have a unique understanding of who they are, and their intentions must be pure when taking this journey. This is imperative because one’s actions have to be in alignment with self-compassion, empathy for others, and practical intent to truly develop personal knowledge. “Personal knowledge is developed by fully knowing who you are and understanding your actions and relationships” (Chinn & Kramer, 2018, p.117). Advancement in nursing practice allows for personal knowledge to be mastered when a person can gain insight through self-reflection, whether journaling about finding meaning to life, advocating to form supportive networks to gain a sense of empowerment and belonging, or meditating to become grounded in the type of person or care one delivers to others. Personal knowledge is also mastered in response, meaning a nurse develops a unique way to help others face difficult times, while practicing self-awareness unconsciously, valuing the impact that interactions with others have on cognition and practice delivery in the health care environment(Chinn & Kramer, 2018). This is important in nursing practice because as the nurse makes career advancements, it must be deliberate and intentional to align one’s actions with knowing what you do(self-awareness) and doing what you know (evidence-based practice) to impact patient outcomes.
“Aesthetic knowing gives rise to nursing actions that move the situation to the desired outcome” (Chinn & Kramer, 2018, p. 135). It takes the practice of nursing and uses it as a platform to change the course of an illness. This is implemented when nurses performed duties as outlined by the nursing process to determine a course of action that will provide a meaningful experience to both the nurse and the patient that will change the environment to promote improvements in health status. Schwind and Manakil-Rankin (2020) suggest that aesthetic knowing connects deep meanings to situations while bridging together envisioning and rehearsing, where the nurse envisions the end-goal of their practice, and then rehearse their nursing acts while caring for patients. Advancement in nursing practice creates a pathway for aesthetic knowledge when nurses transition from novice to expert (connoisseur-critic). This is conducted by creating memorable attachments that can be easily recalled from past experiences during patient encounters that leave a lasting impression on the provider motivating them to create a movement to change the nature of their intentions in practice to impact health outcomes. Aesthetics knowledge is important in nursing practice because it allows the nurse to act while interacting with the patient at the moment to influence patient outcomes.
When asked, “What does this mean and how is it significant” as it relates to the shift from personal knowledge where the provider has the confidence and self-awareness needed to generate this question because they know who they are and recognize the knowledge they possess. This knowledge needs to be shared with others allowing them to transition to aesthetic knowledge to use what has been learned to make appropriate clinical judgments. Providers envision this type of scenario that will elicit a response that represents health and wellbeing, and rehearsal it physically by creating new avenues in healthcare that have not been discovered giving new meaning and significance for evidence-based practice (Chinn & Kramer, 2018). This process will lead to better outcomes, reduce the costs of health, and increase the number of experts in the field changing the health care environment.
