Analysis of The Correlation Between the Rise in Police Brutality in The United States And The Power Rise in The Republican Party
Guidelines for Final Paper POLS 3800
Due date: July 27
The final paper should be 6-8 pages, double spaced, 12 pt. font. Include a list of references and cite referenced works properly. You may use any citation style, as long as it is consistent throughout. Your paper will likely be organized, roughly, as:
• Introduction—defining your question of interest and, briefly, state your theory.
• Previous literature—what do others have to say?
• Your argument—what do you have to say?
• Research design—how would you go about testing your hypotheses? What measures would you use? What tests would you run?
• Conclusion—tie everything together, with some speculation of what you would expect to see and any potential problems you see with your study (no study is perfect, after all).
If you have a reason to organize your paper differently, that’s fine, but it likely won’t deviate too greatly. In the remainder of this document, I’ll add a bit of detail for each section:
• Introduction:
– Give the reader a “hook.” This could involve a couple of things: start with a broad ques- tion (for example, “why do some countries democratize?”) and then move to your specific question (for example, “do major shocks to the economy make democratization more likely?”) which could then be followed by a brief statement of your theory; or, you could start with an anecdote that details the causal mechanism and research question (for ex- ample, a story about a voter in Wisconsin who went for Obama in 2012 but switched to Trump in 2016 to explain your theory of swing voters).
– No matter how you set up your introduction, it should detail to the reader the topic of your paper as well as your causal mechanism.
• Previous literature:
– If necessary, edit and add to the literature review you wrote earlier this summer. – Remember, what you want to avoid are six unrelated paragraphs for each source or “mini
book reports.” Focus on the big picture and how your sources inform what we do or do not know about your topic.
– Let me reiterate that I recognize that you are not experts on your topic and are only detail- ing six sources — I recognize this won’t be a complete summary. Do your best with what you have.
• Your argument:
– What is your explanation for why your independent variable causes your dependent vari- able?
– State your hypothesis of course, but be sure to detail why you believe that hypothesis is true.
– Assume your reader is unfamiliar with your topic—be more detailed than you perhaps think is necessary. In other words, this is a case where more is almost certainly better.
– This could include portions (possibly edited) from your proposal.
• Research design:
– How will you measure your variables? – Which hypothesis test would you use? Is difference of means, χ2, or Pearson’s r most
appropriate? Briefly state why you think the test you have chosen is the most appropriate. The answer to this question depends on the level of measurement of your variables.
– Be sure to elaborate on how you would measure your variables. Would it be a survey? If so, what questions would you ask? Would you use an existing data source? Even if the measurement seems obvious to you, it may not be to a reader.
– Include a discussion of multiple regression. It should include reasons why we use multiple regression (that is, why bivariate tests aren’t enough with observational data). It should also include a list of variables you might control for (but don’t worry about measurement for these).
• Conclusion:
– A brief conclusion stating the purpose of the paper and how your research design, if en- acted, would move our understanding of your topic forward.

Paper proposal
The United States's rise in police brutality is in direct correlation with the power rise in the republican party. Police brutality is at an all time high now in 2020 as well as the power of the republican party. The power of the republican party can be measured by the amount of money put behind the party, the amount of republican members in the government, and the party of the president. I will be able to measure police brutality by looking at recorded killings by the police , and also recorded police beatings. I will have to also keep in mind all of the unrecorded acts of police brutality. With these meausures I will be able to test my hypothesis and prove it to be correct.

Lit Review
In order to fully grasp my argument of my theory I must do some research. In the process researching there where a few articles that stood out to me. I believe that these articles will indeed aid me in my journey of proving that The United States' rise in police brutality is in direct correlation with the power rise in the republican party. I have six articles that I will summarize and show how I will be able to effectively use them for my paper.
In the first article “Police brutality laws in the United States”, Cureton, does a great job informing me about what police brutality is. Cureton breaks down the meaning of police brutality and how it is in America. Cureton also gives examples of acts and titles that are put in place in America against police brutality. I will be able to use this to see when the laws where put in place, and to see if any laws were put into place to contradict the laws put in place. This could help show the power of the republican party because I can see who the president during the time the laws were put into place and what party they were with.
In the next article “Police shootings database 2015-2020" by the Washington Post, there are charts and graphs that show the data of police shootings in different ways. The Washington Post did a great job organizing the information about police shootings. With the charts I will be able to analyze the data to match with the party of the states and the years.
In the article America's Policing Budget Has Nearly Tripled to $115 Billion”, Polly Mosendz and Jameelah D Robinson informs me about the history of police funding. Mosendz and Robinson argue that even though crime has been going down police funding is so going up. They do a great job breaking down the history of police funding all the way back to the 70’s. I will be able to use the information to my advantage to show how the amount of police killings are continuing to rise and crime is falling. This will correlate to with the government aiding the police linking to more police brutality.
In both articles “Party Divisions of the House of Representatives” and “Party Division U.S. Senate: Party Division” the authors organized the data about the seats of the parties for the senate and the house. They used the data all the way from the 1st congress to current congress. This will help me in trying to measure the power of the republican party .
In the last article “What Role Might the Federal Government Play in Law Enforcement Reform?”, The author informs me on the proccess of how The federal government places polocies to fight police brutality. The author uses examples of how police are punished in an act of police brutality and the limits of authority of congress. This will be helpful for me to enlighten me on how much power congress had to stop police brutality and what congress helped and which did not.
