1. In the lecture on World War II, I tried to make it clear that the origins of the war lay first and foremost in Nazi Germany aggressive expansionism and Japanese militaristic imperialism. Yet, at the same time, I argued that we should also see the war in the context of a “war between empires.”
Briefly explain this argument – making sure to discuss economic issues, colonial/imperial issues, and/or global “power” issues.
2. Briefly discuss the long-term history of the “America-the-Messiah” ideology, and then explain the impact America’s victory in World War II had on extending that ideology into the Cold War era.
3.Briefly discuss the “World as a Market” Cold War ideology (i.e. Cold War economic motivations), and explain how it can be seen as an important “cause” for U.S. military interventions around the globe during the Cold War (and/or Korea, specifically).
4. Based on the online lecture, briefly explain why the United States intervened militarily in Korea (1950-1953). In other words, what were some of the major economic, strategic, ideological, and/or policy-based justifications for America’s Korean War?
The expected length of each answer is between 2 and 3 fully-developed paragraphs.
