You are a hospital administrator. Your hospital is facing a surge in patients due to COVID-19. While you currently still have capacity, admissions of COVID-19 patients have been rapidly increasing over the past 2 weeks. Many of your department heads are concerned that the hospital will run out of beds within the next 2 weeks. The hospital’s board of directors, along with the state health department, has asked you to produce a written plan of how you will handle this situation.
Assume the role of hospital administrator. Drawing from your personal knowledge and our readings from Chapters 1, 2 and 3 (notes attached)
Know that ethics has different areas of study with various approaches. The three areas of ethical study define the types of ethical philosophy. The approaches to ethical study present ways to arrive at decisions about ethical dilemmas. Ethical dilemmas fall within the three areas of study, and the approaches are ways of applying the area of study.

The AP (10/16, Hajela) reported, “At least two dozen lawsuits have been filed around the U.S., many in recent weeks, by people seeking to force hospitals to give their COVID-stricken loved ones ivermectin, a drug for parasites that has been promoted by conservative commentators as a treatment despite a lack of conclusive evidence that it helps people with the virus.” However, hospitals are pushing back against the suits, “saying their standards of care don’t allow them to give patients a drug that hasn’t been approved for COVID and could potentially cause harm, and that allowing laypeople and judges to overrule medical professionals is a dangerous road to go down.”
