Imagery of Protest and Social Change
Many of the art subjects of the 18th and early 19th century reflected Enlightenment ideas of social change and political justice. These images took the form of humorous satire, direct protest, or they illustrated a social problem or contemporary scandal. In this discussion, students will introduce images of social commentary. In the end, the class will have assembled a collection not only of works, but of period social problems, contested issues, and class struggles.
