God’s Word as My Hope and Help
“You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in Your word.
Let my soul live and praise You, and let Your rules help me”
Psalm 119:24, 175
God has hardwired human beings for hope. Tom Brady, quarterback of the New England Patriots, aptly illustrated this fact in an interview with 60 Minutes (Links to an external site.) only a few months after winning his third Super Bowl:
Brady: Why do I have three Super Bowl rings, and still think there’s something greater out there for me? I mean, maybe a lot of people would say, ‘Hey man, this is what is.’ I reached my goal, my dream, my life. Me, I think: God, it’s gotta be more than this. I mean this can’t be what it’s all cracked up to be. I mean I’ve done it. I’m 27. And what else is there for me?
60 Minutes: What’s the answer?
Brady: I wish I knew. I wish I knew. I mean I think that’s part of me trying to go out and experience other things. I love playing football, and I love being quarterback for this team, but, at the same time, I think there’s a lot of other parts about me that I’m trying to find. I know what ultimately makes me happy are family and friends, and positive relationships with great people. I think I get more out of that than anything.
Do you hear the desperation to find a solid hope? After reaching the top of his game, becoming one of the greatest quarterbacks ever, Tom Brady realized that his football achievements have not satisfied his hope. Now, he is seeking to find fulfillment in his relationships. However, football, family, and friendships cannot satisfy our hope. The psalmist repeatedly points to God’s Word as his source of hope, “Take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth, for my hope is in Your rules” (119:43).
Yet, we must remember that our hope is in the Word because it’s God’s Word. Note how the psalmist links these together, “You are my hiding place and shield; I hope in Your word” (119:114). As seminary students spending hours pouring over Scripture, we must not lose sight of its source. Hear the words of Jesus to the scholars of His day, “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about Me, yet you refuse to come to Me that you may have life” (John 5:39-40). Is our hope in the trappings of this world or in God and His Word?
Father, in our study of Scripture, help us not to lose sight of its source! You are our only hope! We came to seminary not merely to gain valuable knowledge and skills, but to use these tools to challenge ourselves and others toward a greater hope in You! May our study of Your Word this week drive us to You! In the name Jesus, our Savior, we pray! Amen.
Where are you tempted to base your hope? How are you fighting to base your hope in God?
