Discussion Board 6: Geographies of Race and Resistance
Space and race are important themes in Richard Wright’s 1937 autobiographical sketch, “The Ethics of Living Jim Crow,” and William Henry Lewis’ 2005 story, “I Got Somebody in Staunton.” In Wright’s work, violence and white supremacy prohibit free and equal access to workplaces, neighborhoods, and public space. In Lewis’ fictional narrative, inhibitions on mobility are far more subtle but equally devastating.
Select one of these works and explore how race, space, and double consciousness intersect.
