Ethical Approach Paper
A 3-page paper plus 1 additional page for references:Can be single-spaced, 1.5-spaced, or double-spaced in normal, moderate, ornarrow margin spacing, but it must not exceed 3 pages with a 4thpage for references only. Do not use a cover sheet. Pleaseadd your name and pages numbers in the heading of the document, so they appearon each page. Please utilize an easy-to-read type, like Calibri, and use 11- or12-point type. This means if you decide to include any graphs or charts, pleasemake them conform to the 3-page limit. Utilize a 4th page for yourlist of references if you use APA or MLA style. If you would like to useChicago Style or The Bluebook, footnote your citations, and then you will notneed a 4th page for your references. I recommend utilizing PurduesOWL website for information on citations:

Select 1 of the following 2 ethical scenarios toevaluate: Volkswagen or Wells Fargo. Please reference at least 1 news articleor video regarding the scandal. I selected a few below that you may use and/orperuse to see which ethical scandal youre more interested inevaluating.
VOLKSWAGEN
- Early 2015 story about Volkswagen: https://www.bbc.com/news/business-34324772
- The evolving story from a few hours ago:

WELLS FARGO
- A timeline with a video: https://money.cnn.com/2018/04/24/news/companies/wells-fargo-timeline-shareholders/index.html
- 2016 article: https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2016-09-09/wells-fargo-opened-a-couple-million-fake-accounts
- 2016 article: https://www.newyorker.com/business/currency/the-record-fine-against-wells-fargo-points-to-the-failure-of-regulation
Evaluate the Volkswagen OR WellsFargo ethical scandal utilizing 1 of the3 ethical frameworks that we discussed:
- Consequentialism: Utilitarianism or Ethical Egoism
- Deontological (Duty)
- Virtue Ethics
In evaluating Volkswagen OR Wells Fargo, utilize the terminology and descriptions from the Ethics reading youcompleted for our class. Cite to that reading as well. Explainthe ethical framework itself before applying it to VW or WF. Inapplying the framework to either case, consider the following: It can be achallenge applying an abstract principle to a real case. The best way toapproach this is to identify the stakeholders first. Include the stakeholdersin your analysis. See the analysis of BASF on page 2 of thearticle for ideas about this. It would be effective toapply this analysis to a range of potential stakeholders. Alternatively, youmay apply the analysis more in depth to one specific stakeholder. Youmay utilize outside articles, videos, and materials, but need to cite allmaterials utilized. (I dont recommend utilizing other resources you have what you need!) Remember that the goal of this assignmentis to display a working knowledge of how toapply ethical decision-making to a real-life scenario.
Considerations:
- Remember that an action may be deemed an ethical behavior, but it may not have been codified in law. It is not more ethical just because it has been codified as law. For example, if you applied different ethical frames to the Stand Your Ground laws, you might have different results; this is codified in some states, but not others. The same is true for a litany of other important issues from capital punishment to zoning to family law issues.
- There is no right answer. Ethical considerations are process-based considerations so your explanation and understanding are key. I recommend utilizing a process approach here: Select a framework that appeals to you, reread the description so you understand its elements, select pieces to incorporate in your paper, and then apply it to your selected case. Consider your 3-page paper as an argument, persuading me on how the ethical frame you utilize would be applied to that organization. For example, you can argue that a stakeholder utilized that specific approach. You can select any stakeholder youre interested in examining. You can argue that a stakeholder did NOT utilize that approach — and what would have happened if the stakeholder had used that approach.
- Ethical questioning and decision-making leads to more questions. For example, a former student shared that due to continuous safety issues, his organization was having difficulty maintaining the high-level standard it adopted to maintain safety, namely a 3-day off-the-job requirement for safety violations/issues. Here are questions that came up: Should the organization subvert its emphasis on safety, where it is a leader in its industry as well as a protector of its employees and processes? This would be the easy way out and not the ethical choice in terms of our frames. Instead, does the organization need to recalibrate its training of all supervisors? All employees? Yes, and yes. How would each ethical frame respond to this scenario? From the ethical frames, what questions should the organization ask itself? For your evaluation of one of two ethical issues, you may ask questions of the organization at any point in its timeline as well. You can suggest recommendations. Work beyond just the idea of complying with the law: Why did the specific employees make the decisions they did to begin with? What about the divisions? How would you describe the workplace culture? Did they work against their code of conduct, for example? Try to present a nuanced understanding of the issue.
- We are faced with ethical decisions every single day and now more than ever. Overall, the class session and paper are designed to have you think about how and why you make certain decisions so you can step back and consider impacts. Consider the basis for each framework as well. You ultimately want to use this experience to help you ASK GOOD QUESTIONS in your workplace that originate from the approaches. As an individual, you can impact your organization and community. Theres a highly personal benefit as well: You want to help yourself and your friends and family utilize good decision-making too. Asking effective questions is one of the best tools to gain more self-awareness and increase emotional intelligence.
