Sarin Danielian Topic Proposal
Approximately 40% of Americans above the age of 20 are obese. Obesity is a complex disease in which the body has excessive amounts of body fat which contributes to the development and/or worsening of other diseases. Whilst there are other conditions that can contribute to Obesity, such as poor functioning thyroid, physical disabilities, and/or genetic predisposition(s). This topic interests me because it is preventable in so many ways. Lifestyle modifications primarily can prevent and treat obesity. During the pandemic, we saw how obesity was a major underlying concern for persons contracting COVID-19 as persons battling obesity were more prone to developing severe complications from the virus. Unfortunately, we face socioeconomic factors such as inadequate access for all classes of persons to purchase and consume healthy foods free from additives and preservatives, as well as the mass production of processed foods at more affordable prices than that of fresh organic foods.
